You have to note that the eyes of your baby are not fully developed immediately after birth. In premature babies, the eye lids may not be developed completely. The amount of melanin in the iris determines the eye color in your baby. This is the same pigment that determines color of your skin.

  • If your baby is fair skinned, you may find his or her eyes blue or gray after birth because of the less melanin content.
  • If your baby’s skin is darker, you will find brown hues in the eyes.
  • African or Asian babies are generally born with brown eyes.
  • Eyes retain the same color, although it takes around three years for the eyes to stick to a particular color.
  • Even though the eye colors are determined by the genetic trait, there are plenty of other factors that you should be aware of. Here are some of them:
  • If both parents are blue eyed, your baby might be born with blue eyes.
  • If you are brown eyed, there are high chances of your baby too getting brown eyes.
  • If the grand parents have blue eyes, your child is likely to have the same.

In cases when babies are born with a brown eye and a blue eye, they may be suffering from Waardenburg syndrome. However, this is a rare genetic disorder. It is essential that you consult an ophthalmologist in this case.

Changes In Baby Eye Colors:

After the baby is born, the light stimulates melanin production in the iris. This process then leads to the change in eye color. Changes in the eye color happen mostly when your baby is 6 months old. The changes continue till the age of 9 months.
