The words “chicken pakora” can make me salivate instantly. Crispy on the outside, juicy inside, subtle spices that hit the taste buds with the right intensity, and dipped in ketchup, mayonnaise or mint chutney – chicken pakoras are small pockets of joy that burst in your mouth like confetti! Often, when I have guests coming over or need something to eat with a hot cup of coffee or tea on a rainy day, I make chicken pakora. However, I get bored of making the same recipe again and again. So, I try different cooking methods and experiment with different ingredients, dips, and batter to create a different chicken pakora each time. Some recipes have failed, but a few turned out to be a winner (wink!). And nothing makes me happier than sharing these chicken pakora recipes with you. So, without any delay, let’s get cooking!

1. Classic Chicken Pakora

Prep Time: 30 min  Cooking Time: 15 min  Total Time: 45 min  Serves: 6

Ingredients

  • 500 gm boneless chicken cubes
  • ½ cup thinly sliced onion
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon garam masala
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • ½ teaspoon coriander powder
  • 3-4 tablespoons chickpea flour or besan
  • 1 teaspoon corn flour
  • 1 teaspoon chopped green chili
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil to deep fry

 How To Prepare

  1. Mix the onion, lemon juice, ginger paste, garlic paste, chili powder, turmeric, garam masala, coriander, green chili, and salt in a bowl.
  2. Drop the chicken cubes and mix well. Keep it aside for 10 minutes.
  3. Now, add the besan and corn flour to the bowl containing the chicken cubes and mix well.
  4. Heat the oil in a pan and fry the chicken cubes until they become golden brown.
  5. Serve hot with ketchup or mint chutney.

2. Curry Leaf Chicken Pakora

Ingredients

  • 500 gm boneless chicken cubes
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric
  • 12 -15 curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon peanut paste
  • 4 tablespoons gram flour or besan
  • 1 teaspoon corn flour
  • 4 slit chilies
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying

 How To Prepare

  1. Add egg, coriander powder, chili powder, turmeric, curry leaves, ginger and garlic paste, peanut paste, and salt in a bowl.
  2. Toss the chicken cubes in the bowl and mix well. Keep it aside for 10 minutes.
  3. Add the besan and corn flour to the bowl and mix well.
  4. Heat the oil in a pan and fry the chicken cubes until they turn golden brown.

 3. Punjabi Chicken Pakora

Ingredients

  • 500 gm boneless chicken
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons ginger-garlic paste
  • 5 tablespoons yogurt
  • 5-6 tablespoons gram flour or besan
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons chopped green chili
  • 1 tablespoon coriander powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin powder
  • 1 tablespoon kasuri methi
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • 1 teaspoon dried mango powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying

 How To Prepare

  1. Add curd, ginger-garlic paste, cumin, coriander, and chili powders, chopped chili, turmeric, salt, ghee, kasuri methi, and salt to a bowl and mix well.
  2. Drop the chicken pieces and mix well. Set it aside for 20 minutes.
  3. Now, add the gram flour and all-purpose flour to the bowl and mix.
  4. Heat the oil in a pan and fry the chicken until it turns golden brown.
  5. Sprinkle dried mango powder before serving hot with mint chutney.

4. Crispy Moong Chicken Pakora

Ingredients

  • 300 gm boneless chicken cubes
  • 4-5 tablespoons soaked moong daal
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons gram flour
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • ½ cup thinly sliced onions
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • ½ teaspoon chili flakes
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 3 teaspoons ginger paste
  • 2 teaspoons green chili paste
  • 1 small bowl of tamarind extract
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon rice bran oil
  • Oil for deep frying

 How To Prepare

  1. Blend the soaked moong dal. Add water if required to make it into a fine paste. Add a little salt to it and mix.
  2. Add all-purpose flour, gram flour, ginger and garlic paste, onions, coriander powder, chili flakes, turmeric powder, and salt to a bowl and mix well. Keep it aside for 15 minutes.
  3. In the meanwhile, prepare the dip by heating a pan and adding a teaspoon of rice bran oil to it. Add ginger and fry for 20 seconds. Add green chili paste, salt, and tamarind extract. Cook for 2 minutes. Remove from the flame and keep it aside.
  4. Heat oil in a pan for deep frying.
  5. Take the chicken pieces one at a time, dip them into the moong paste and drop them into the oil.
  6. Fry until they turn golden brown.
  7. Serve hot with tamarind chutney.

5. Andhra Style Chicken Pakora

Ingredients

  • 500 gm boneless chicken cubes
  • ½ cup chopped onion
  • 2 teaspoons green chilies
  • 3 tablespoons lemon Juice
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried coconut powder
  • 1 tablespoon peanut powder
  • 2 teaspoons ginger and garlic paste
  • 3 tablespoons gram Flour
  • 1 tablespoon rice flour
  • Chopped green chili
  • A few curry leaves for garnish
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Salt

How To Prepare

  1. Add chicken cubes, ginger-garlic paste, chili powder, green chili, turmeric, peanut powder, dried coconut powder, lemon juice, chopped onion, salt, and a little water to a bowl. Mix well and keep it aside for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat the oil in a pan.
  3. Add gram flour to the bowl containing chicken and mix well.
  4. Take one chicken piece at a time, put it in the bowl containing rice flour, coat well and drop it in the pan for frying.
  5. Fry until golden brown.
  6. Garnish with curry leaves and serve hot.

6. Chinese Chicken Pakora

Ingredients

  • 300 gm boneless chicken cubes
  • ½ cup chopped scallions
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon organic honey
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons corn flour
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Salt to taste

How To Prepare

  1. Toss the chicken cubes, white portions of the scallions, sesame seeds, fish sauce, Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, grated ginger, organic honey, chili flakes, and salt in a bowl. Add a little water if required. Mix well and keep it aside for 15 minutes.
  2. Mix all-purpose flour, corn flour, and a little salt in a plate.
  3. Heat oil in a pan.
  4. Take one chicken cube at a time and put it in the flour mix, coat well, and drop it into the hot oil. Fry until the pieces turn golden brown.
  5. Garnish with sesame seeds and the green portion of the scallions.

7. Hawaiian Chicken Pakora

  • 500 gm boneless chicken cubes
  • ½ cup pineapple juice
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons chopped pineapple
  • 4 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • A handful of coriander leaves
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • Oil for frying
  • Salt to taste

How To Prepare

  1. Combine chicken cubes, pineapple juice, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, lime juice, low-sodium soy sauce, minced garlic, grated ginger, ketchup, black pepper, and salt. Keep it aside for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and shallow fry the chicken cubes until they become soft inside and caramelized outside.
  3. Garnish with chopped pineapple and coriander leaves.

  • 1 teaspoon freshly made mustard paste
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon corn flour
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 3 tablespoons yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying

 How to Prepare

  1. Combine chicken cubes, mustard paste, honey, lime juice, egg, onion, chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt in a bowl. Keep it aside for 15 minutes.
  2. In a different bowl, mix corn flour, all-purpose flour, salt, dried thyme, and black pepper.
  3. Heat a pan and add oil.
  4. In another bowl, prepare the dip by mixing yogurt, mayonnaise, smoked paprika, and a little salt.
  5. Take one piece of chicken at a time and dip it into the bowl containing the flour mix. Coat the chicken pieces with the flour mixture and drop them into the oil.
  6. Fry until they turn golden brown.
  7. Serve hot with the dip.

9. Minced Chicken Pakora

Ingredients

  • 500 gm minced chicken
  • 1 ½ teaspoons garam masala
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • ½ cup chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  • ¼ cup chopped parsley
  • 1 egg
  • 1 ½ teaspoons coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • 2 tablespoons rice flour
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Salt to taste
  • A handful of coriander leaves
  • Oil for shallow frying

How To Prepare

  1. Combine the minced chicken with ghee, garam masala, egg, chili powder, cumin and coriander powders, turmeric, lime juice, onion, parsley, ginger and garlic paste, and salt.
  2. Take a tablespoon of the minced chicken mix and roll it into a round shape using your palms. Press down to form a chicken patty.
  3. Do the same with the rest of the minced chicken mix.
  4. In a plate, mix the rice flour, all-purpose flour, and salt.
  5. Pick up the chicken patties, coat them with the flour mix and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  6. Heat oil in a pan and shallow fry the chicken patties until they turn golden brown.
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with ketchup.

10. Spicy Chicken Pakora

  • ½ cup curd

  • 1 tablespoon tandoori masala

15. Mexican Style Chicken Pakora

Ingredients

  • 500 gm minced chicken
  • ½ cup mashed avocado
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onion
  • 5 pickled jalapenos, chopped
  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • ¼ cup yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ cup taco shell crumbs
  • Oil to shallow fry

How To Prepare

  1. Combine the minced chicken with mashed avocado, chopped onion, chopped pickled jalapenos, cilantro, chili flakes, yogurt, and salt.
  2. Take a tablespoon of this minced chicken and use your palms to make medium-sized balls.
  3. Whisk the egg in a bowl.
  4. Carefully coat the chicken balls with flour, then dip them into the whisked egg, and then coat them with taco shell crumbs.
  5. Refrigerate for 20 minutes.
  6. Deep fry them until they are golden brown.
  7. Add a dash of lemon and enjoy!
