The day marks a special day in broadcasting when channels across the world telecast various programs for children. International Children’s Day began in Turkey on the 23rd of April 1920. It was later given recognition at the World Conference for the Well-Being of Children which was held in Geneva, in Switzerland, in the year 1925. Once the conference was over, the governments of most countries agreed to select one day as International Children’s Day, in an attempt to draw attention towards various issues related to children.

2. Universal Children’s Day:

Universal Children’s Day is celebrated each year on the 20th November. The concept began in the year 1954 in an attempt to protect children who were made to work long hours in unsafe conditions. The main aim of declaring and celebrating Universal Children’s Day was to make sure that all children have basic access to learning. It aimed at making authorities come together and work towards achieving the rights of children. The UN General Assembly recommended that all countries should acknowledge Universal Children’s Day to give the concept a wider reach. In the year 1959, the UN adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Child on the 20th of November. The declaration spelled out each right that all children would be entitled to. From then on, Universal Children’s Day has been celebrated on the 20th of November every year.

3. World Children’s Day:

World Children’s Day is also celebrated on the same day as Universal Children’s Day, on the 20th of November. It was first celebrated on the 20th of November in the year 2002 as part of a global and annual fundraiser by McDonalds. McDonald’s carries out various fundraising events on this day to raise money for its Ronald McDonald House Charities. More than 100 countries celebrate the day today.

• In the year 1998, a six-year-old boy wrote a letter to President Bill Clinton, who wanted to know if the president would declare a day as Children’s Day for him. In response, President Bill Clinton proclaimed 11th of October to be held as Children’s Day.

• In the year 2001, the then President George W. Bush proclaimed 3rd June as the National Child’s Day. Ever since then, the first Sunday in June has been celebrated as Children’s Day in the US, which has recently been changed to the second Sunday in the month of June.

6. Children’s Day In Japan:

Japan celebrates Children’s Day on the 5th of May each year and the day is marked as a national holiday. It is also known as Kodomo no Hi, which means Children’s Day. Initially, it was known as ‘Tango no Sekku’ and was celebrated as a Boys’ Day, while the Girls’ Day, known as Hinamatsuri, was celebrated on the 3rd of March. In the year 1948, the government of Japan decided to merge the two days and celebrate one day that would mark the happiness of all children whether a boy or a girl. The government of Japan then also declared that Children’s Day would be celebrated as a national holiday. The origin goes back to China, where people used to hang various medicinal herbs to ward off the illnesses that are associated with childhood. As per the Japanese tradition, children are given gifts of kites and hanging streamers.
