5 Different Child Behavior Charts & Their Benefits
The behavior of your child plays a big role in determining his success. As a parent, if you can identify behavioral and emotional issues in your child at an early stage, it will help you enhance his behavior and help him achieve his goals. To aid you in this process, we present to you a detailed view on the child behavior checklist.
What Is A Child Behavior Checklist?
A child behavior checklist or CBCL, as it is often referred to, is a checklist that is completed by parents to identify behavioral and emotional issues in children and teenagers. It was founded by Thomas Achenbach and is a factor in the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment.
The checklist is a kind of feedback form that collects details from you and your relatives with respect to your child’s capabilities and emotional status. In short, it is an evaluation of social and behavioral issues in your child. The age of the child may vary anywhere from eighteen months to eighteen years. The successful completion of the form depends on your honest feedback.
Types Of CBCL:
The problems faced by your child can be recognized by you or somebody who knows your child well.
A checklist has two types:
1. The School Age Checklist: This is proposed for children aged six to eighteen years and contains 120 questions.
2. The Preschool Checklist: This applies to children aged eighteen months to five years and contains 100 questions.
How Does A CBCL Help?
A CBCL helps in the following ways:
- Determines your child’s psychological, behavioral and societal facets.
- Acts as an analytical and indicative instrument for various emotional, cognitive and child behavioral disorders. Some of these are Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Conduct Disorder, Childhood Depression, and childhood and teenage issues.
- Poses specific queries pertaining to the conduct of your child.
- Assesses problems with regard to your child’s emotions.
- Determines the psychology of your child.
- It is you and your acquaintances who assess your kid’s conduct as per the questions introduced (this is done via this checklist).
- A checklist of this sort is very helpful in determining whether your child suffers from any behavioral disability. It goes that extra mile in assisting him and also leads you to take necessary steps to help him solve his problems.
How To Help Your Child In Case The Checklist Reveals Anything Abnormal?
Of course the results may not always be positive. Though this may cause you some initial alarm, there is absolutely no need to lose hope or feel let down as a parent. There are various ways by which you and your child can work around the issues.
Here are some of the ways in which you can help your child:
- Take him to a psychologist or a psychiatrist who can diagnose the illness, if any.
- Ask your doctor on what needs to be done, in case of a clinical condition.
- Make your child feel secure and provide him assurance that everything is going to be fine.
- Ask the doctor the details of the behavioral disorder in your child and take guidance from him.
- Follow the course of treatment which he advises for your child.
- Provide your child extra love and support, come what may.
- Always guide and encourage your child so that he can overcome his problems.
You expect your child to be decent and well behaved. But quite often, this does not happen and he turns out to be the other way round. A child behavior chart is of a lot of use if your child misbehaves. It offers an efficient and optimistic way of improving his behavior. For issues in the classroom, a chart is an incredible way through which decent rules and regulations can be upheld.
