When Is Fathers Day?

On which date is fathers day celebrated is a debatable topic. Some believe that the celebration and trend of Father’s Day is not even a hundred years old. On the other hand, there are many who believe that Father’s Day was first celebrated more than 4,000 years ago!

According to recent believers, Father’s Day came to be recognized as a special day due to the hard work and efforts of one Ms. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd from Washington. Let’s take a look at the various theories that abound:

Father’s Day In 2017:

Sunday, 18 June

The Earliest History Of Father’s Day:

According to scholars, celebrating Father’s Day is not a new tradition but one that can be traced as far back as to the ruins of Babylon. Scholars note that in the ruins of Babylon, they have a found a message that was left by a boy named Elmesu. The boy had apparently carved a message for Father’s Day on a card that was made out of clay. The message has been recorded to be dated more than 4,000 years ago. In the card, the boy had wished a long life and good health for his father.

The History Of Fathers Day As Per The US Tradition:

The modern day celebrations of Father’s Day are believed to have originated in the United States of America. According to popular belief, Ms. Sonora from Washington is the lady who is responsible for making Father’s Day a worldwide phenomenon today. It is believed that sometime in the year 1909, Ms. Sonora heard a sermon on Mother’s Day. At the time she was about 27 years of age and found it odd that even though there was a day to honor mothers, there was no day marked out to honor fathers. Her own father, Mr. William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran and was a loving dad to Sonora. When Sonora’s mother died giving birth even when Sonora was 16, her father raised the new baby and Sonora and her siblings on his own. It was obvious Ms. Sonora felt so strongly about the need for a Father’s Day.

Ms. Sonora soon started a campaign to raise interest in Father’s Day in the US and help mark a day to celebrate it for fathers. The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) and the Spokane Ministerial Association came out in support of the cause. With their contributed efforts, the first ever Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane in the year 1910. The date was 19th of June. Initially people were not sure about the celebrations, but each year on, it gained more and more popularity. Today, Father’s Day is celebrated with as much celebration as Mother’s Day and in many countries around the world.

Father’s Day Poems And Songs:

Here is our selection of some happy Fathers Day poems and songs that will make great additions to any card, drawing or gift:

  1. Who is a father? A father is someone who wants to catch you before you fall, but instead, picks you up and brushes you off, and lets you try again. A father is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence each time you get hurt. A father is someone who holds you when you cry, scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed and has faith in you even when you fail.
  1. Dear Father – I just want to let you know, you mean the world to me, only a heart as dear as yours, would give so unselfishly. The many things you’ve done, all the times that you were there, help me know deep down inside, how much you really care. Even though I might not say, I appreciate all you do, richly blessed is how I feel, having a Father just like you.

  1. I love to wear my daddy’s shoes, even though my feet are small. When they are in my daddy’s shoes, I feel 10 feet tall. Some day I’ll grow to fill them, I only hope to be, as fine a man and great a dad, as my daddy is to me.
  1. What can you say to someone who has always been one of the most essential parts of your world, someone who took you by the hand when you were little, and helped to show the way? What do you say to someone who stood by to help you grow, providing love, strength and support, so you could become the person you are today? What can you say to let him know that he’s the best there is, and that you hope you’ve inherited some of his wisdom and his strength? What words would you say if you ever got the chance? Maybe you just say – I Love You Dad – and hope he understands.
  1. A little girl needs her daddy for many many things. Like holding her high off the ground where the sunlight sings. Like being the deep music that tells her all is right, when she awakens frantic with the terrors of the night. Like being the great mountain that rises in her heart, and shows her how she might get home when all else falls apart. Like giving her the love that is her sea and air. So diving deep or soaring high, she’ll always find him there.
  1. A dad is a person who is loving and kind, and often he knows what you have on your mind. He’s someone who listens, suggests and defends. A dad can be one of your very best friends. He’s proud of your triumphs, but when things go wrong, a dad can be patient and helpful and strong. In all that you do, a dad’s love plays a part. There’s always a place for him deep in your heart, and each year that passes, you’re even more glad, more grateful, and proud, just to call him your dad. Thank you dad, for listening and caring, for giving and sharing, but especially for just being you.
  1. Dad – If I could write a story, it would be the greatest ever told, of a king and a loving dad, who had a heart of gold. I could write a million pages, but still be unable to say, just how much I love and miss you, every single day. I will remember all you taught me, I will always think of you and not be sad, because in my heart you will send me answers, coz I will always have you as my dad.
  1. I am so glad when daddy comes home, glad as I can be, I clamp my hands and shout for joy, then climb upon his knee. I put my arms around his neck and I hug him tight like this. I pat his cheek, then give him what? A great big kiss.
  1. In all the things I try to do, I want to do them just like you. I’m watching every move you make, and trying to take each step you take. Although right now I’m sort of small, when I’m with you I feel ten feet tall. Like you, I want to be brave and smart, cause I love you daddy, with all my heart.
  1. My father is a man who has smiles that brighten each of my days. My father is a man who made me feel so good with his warm words of praise. And what is more is that he knows just what to do to make my wishes come true. My father is someone who always has the best stories to tell me. And just as importantly, he is a good listener as well. My father is patient, my father is kind and the very best. He is also the best friend I could ever hope to find. And I am proud to say it out loud that father, I love you.
  1. I remember when I was a kid, I wanted to grow up like my dad. It didn’t matter how or what he did, it could be good or maybe bad. But you are simply the best dad, the best gift that I ever had. You have given your all for me, your love I’ve tasted all my life.

  1. FATHER – ‘F’aithful ‘A’lways there ‘T’rustworthy ‘H’onoring ‘E’verloving ‘R’ighteous ‘S’upportive
  1. God took the strength of a mountain, the majesty of a tree. The warmth of a summer sun, the calm of a quiet sea. The generous soul of nature, the comforting arm of night. The wisdom of the ages, the power of the eagles’ flight. The joy of a morning in spring, the faith of a mustard seed. The patience of eternity, the depth of a family need. Then god combined these qualities, when there was nothing more to add. He knew his masterpiece was complete, and so he called it DAD.
  1. My dad and I we think alike, he knows just what I mean. Before I even say a word, he reads, well, in between. My dad and I we like to fish, or build a model plane. Or fix a broken chair or two, or just a windowpane. My dad and I we know the score, of every single game. Sometimes he’s really busy too, but he takes me just the same. My dad and I we go swimming too, each year and sometimes twice. My dad and I, we do everything, my dad – he’s really nice.
  1. Over the years, as we grow old, we remember our father, so brave and bold. In the garden, leaning on the plow, he would listen to me, I see him now. He would give advice, and understand, he was always there, to lend a hand. God made fathers, strong and firm, for he knew our lives, would have great concerns. So he gave us fathers, to teach us to pray, and guide our lives, and show us the way. So on his day, let’s take the time, to say ‘Thanks Dad, I’m glad you’re mine.’
  1. Daddy I love you, for all that you do. I’ll kiss you and hug you, for you love me too. You feed me and need me, you teach me to play. So smile, coz I love you, on this Father’s Day.
  1. Bedtime came, we were settling down, I was holding one of my lads. As I grasped him so tight, I saw a strange sight: My hands. . .they looked like my dad’s! I remember them well, those old gnarled hooks,
there was always a cracked nail or two. And thanks to a hammer that strayed from its mark, his thumb was a beautiful blue! They were rough, I remember, incredibly tough, as strong as a carpenter’s vice. But holding a scared little boy at night, they seemed to me awfully nice! The sight of those hands – how impressive it was in the eyes of his little boy. Other dads’ hands were cleaner, it seemed (the effects of their office employ). I gave little thought in my formative years of the reason for Dad’s raspy mitts:
The love in the toil, the dirt and the oil, rusty plumbing that gave those hands fits! Thinking back, misty-eyed, and thinking ahead, when one day my time is done. The torch of love in my own wrinkled hands
will pass on to the hands of my son. I don’t mind the bruises, the scars here and there or the hammer that just seemed to slip. I want most of all when my son takes my hand, to feel that love lies in the grip.

  1. When I was just a tiny kid, Do you remember when, The time you kissed my bruises, Or cleaned by soiled chin? You scrambled for the balls I hit, (Short-winded more than not,) Yet, every time we’d play a game, You praised the “outs” I caught. It seems like only yesterday, You wiped away my tears, And late at night I called your name, To chase away my fears. Though time has changed your handsome grip,
Your hair is snowy white, You gait’s a little slower now, Thick glasses help your sight. Oh, do I thirst for years gone by, To be that growing lad, Re-living all of the memories, Of growing with my dad.
  1. Fathers are wonderful people Too little understood, And we do not sing their praises As often as we should… For, somehow, Father seems to be The man who pays the bills, While Mother binds up little hurts And nurses all our ills… And Father struggles daily To live up to “HIS IMAGE” As protector and provider And “hero or the scrimmage”… And perhaps that is the reason We sometimes get the notion,
That Fathers are not subject To the thing we call emotion, But if you look inside Dad’s heart, Where no one else can see You’ll find he’s sentimental And as “soft” as he can be… But he’s so busy every day
In the grueling race of life, He leaves the sentimental stuff To his partner and his wife… But Fathers are just WONDERFUL In a million different ways, And they merit loving compliments And accolade of praise, For the only reason Dad aspires To fortune and success Is to make the family proud of him And to bring them happiness… And like OUR HEAVENLY FATHER, He’s a guardian and a guide, Someone that we can count on To be ALWAYS ON OUR SIDE.
  1. Be kind to thy father, for when thou wert young, Who loved thee so fondly as he? He caught the first accents that fell from thy tongue, And joined in thy innocent glee.
  1. There in every memory See his love and care Strength and hands to count on Freely he does share Provider, toil so faithfully To make our dreams come true Give strong and tender discipline Though it is hard to do A Father is God’s chosen one To lead the family And point it to His will for life Of love and harmony…
  1. Happy Fathers Day Happy Fathers day means more than have a happy day It means I love you first of all Then thanks for all you do It means you mean a lot to me and that I honor you.
  1. God made a father who is, as sweet as a nectar, as brave as a lion, as cheerful as a bear, and he gave such dear father to me.

  1. Who can fix my broken bike? Whose strong hands can hold me tight? When I need someone to make things right, It’s my dear old Dad. Who does things that help me grow? Who shows me so I will know? When I need someone to catch or throw, It’s my dear old Dad. Dads come in all shapes and sizes, Big or small, short or tall, Someday I hope that I will be, Half as great as he. Who helps me know right from wrong? Who works hard all day long? When I need someone to sing along, It’s my dear old Dad.
Dads come in all shapes and sizes, Big or small, short or tall, Someday I hope that I will be, Half as great as he. At night before I go to sleep, I thank the stars for giving me, The greatest man in history, It’s my dear old Dad. It’s my dear old Dad. It’s my dear old Dad.
  1. I remember when I was a little boy At home on a rainy day My father would go and he’d look in his room And bring out his music to play He’d open his case and play us a tune For me and the family And the sound was so clear and full of life As I played a harmony. He played polkas and jigs, a two-step and more He played them with style and finesse But when it came time for a Viennesse waltz I knew then that’s what he loved best. He’d pick it and dance it and play it again. He’d sing us a serenade And the rain was the rhythm that faded away And left us a sunny day.
  • Chorus:

Yes, when my dad played the mandolin
You could almost hear the orchestra play
When my dad played the mandolin
A waltz is what he played.

Now I am grown. I live on my own. I’m home on a rainy day I thought of old times so I called up my dad.

Long distance, ’cause I wanted to say “I’ve been thinking about you and those good old songs The ones we used to know.” “Well,” he said, “I put the mandolin down More than a year ago.” Now it’s taken me years to finally know The gift of that rainy day When my father would go and he’d look in his room And bring out his music to play He’d be playin’ a tune so sweet and so free As I sat there and followed along.

Now I give back to him what he gave to me than He gave to me a song.
