Green tea is spectacular. It is amazingly nutritious. But, the actual green tea shot has nothing do with green tea. It doesn’t even use green tea!

Well, then, what is it? It is a quick-to-make alcoholic beverage that is sure to leave your taste buds with a zing.

What Is A Green Tea Shot?

A green tea shot might soothe your nerves. It looks like green tea but contains a bit of alcohol and other explosive ingredients that leave you feeling refreshed.

We can call it a refreshment with a twist. The hard stuff with a bit of bounce. A quick gulp of liquid courage.

The shot has a fruity taste and is excellently refreshing during the summers. It has other variants too. But nothing comes close to the classic green tea shot.

How To Make The Classic Green Tea Shot

The only reason it is called the green tea shot is its greenish color. That’s about it. It is also called Jameson green tea. A quick inquiry with the bartender will get you equal amounts of three different alcohols.

You can prepare it at home as well. Here’s what you need:

  • 15 ml (0.5 oz) of Jameson Irish Whiskey
  • 15 ml of peach schnapps
  • 15 ml of sour mix
  • A dash of lemonade (or even Cola or Sprite, if you wish)
  • A handful of ice cubes
How To Prepare
  1. Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker and shake well.
  2. Pour the mixture into a small shot glass.
One Classic Green Tea Shot contains about 89 calories.

You can get your shot glasses here.

But if you are not big on taking shots, we have something for you. You can transform this into a regular sized cocktail – a green tea martini!

You have to shake the ingredients in the cocktail shaker a little longer – allowing the ice cubes to melt. You can then top it with extra lemonade.

In case you are not too happy with the absence of green tea leaves, well, we have a couple of other popular recipes that will give you exactly what you want.

What Are The Other Popular Green Tea Shots?

1. Matcha Green Tea Shot

This one hits the bullseye when it comes to health benefits. It has a rich and earthy flavor and is quite simple to prepare.

What You Need
  • 1 teaspoon of matcha green tea powder
  • 4 ounces (120 ml) of hot water
  • 1 bamboo whisk
Directions
  1. Pour the hot water into a bowl.
  2. Add the matcha green tea powder and stir vigorously with the bamboo whisk. Use a zigzag motion.
  3. Pour this beverage into a shot glass and enjoy.

But do these green tea shots do any good for your health? Or would you just be downing empty calories with zero nutritional value?

Do Green Tea Shots Have Any Benefits?

There is no direct research on the health benefits of green tea shots. But looking at the ingredients used, we may arrive at some conclusions.

Intake of whiskey may boost the antioxidant content in the body. The phenols in whiskey might be responsible for this (1), (2).

Green tea has been identified for its benefits too. Studies show that the catechins in green tea can help treat obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes (3). It may even help cut down cancer risk (4).

Matcha green tea was found to enhance fat oxidation in females, when coupled with exercise (5).

These benefits may not be attributed to green tea shots containing alcohol – not especially in large doses or when taken regularly. You may take them once in a while, but we don’t recommend you overdo them.

Also, green tea shots may not be for everyone.

Any Concerns To Keep In Mind?

Green tea shots may cause certain issues in some people. But, we don’t have direct research to support this fact. However, it is best if people with the following problems stay away from green tea shots (or any form of green tea or alcohol):

Individuals taking prescription drugs. Green tea may interfere with these drugs and reduce their efficacy (6).

Individuals with liver problems. Studies show green tea extracts may cause liver damage if taken in excess (6).

Individuals with digestive issues. Green tea may cause problems in people with a sensitive stomach. It may cause stomach upset, nausea, abdominal pain, and dizziness (7). Individuals with heart problems, renal diseases, and thyroid issues should exercise care and consult with their doctor.

Individuals with mental issues. The alcohol in traditional green tea shots may cause problems in individuals who have heart problems, high blood pressure, liver and pancreas issues, and cancer (8).

Conclusion

Green tea shots are fun. You can prepare them in the combinations you wish to. They add a dash of zing to your life and even pep up your health (if you choose to add real green tea leaves). Just keep the concerns in mind and remember not to overdo it.
