Pregnancy is an overwhelming time, more so if you’re caught in the middle of a pandemic. Unfortunately, we can’t make it go away with the snap of a finger. What we can do, however, is practice all the necessary precautions to keep ourselves as well as our loved ones safe. One thing this pandemic has taught us is that we can’t really take things for granted and expect everything to go smoothly all the time. We should be ready for chaotic situations where navigating through would require our calm and attentiveness. While it’s totally natural to be anxious about your pregnancy and how you’ll deal with it, panicking too much wont lead to anything. Instead, better informing yourself and planning ahead for tough times will keep you ready to brave through such turbulent times in a more composed manner.

If you’re pregnant, chances are that you’re worried and have several questions. Experts are still figuring out how the virus can impact you when pregnant, but we do have a few answers to address your concerns. We’ve made a list of some of the most important things you need to know if you are pregnant at this time, so continue reading:

Can You Infect Your Child When Pregnant?

Most pregnant women have a leading concern — “will my baby get infected if I test positive for the virus?” The good news is that, as of now, there are no reports confirming that an expectant mother can transmit the virus to her child in the womb. The WHO has officially declared that studies are being conducted to figure out if pregnant mothers can infect their babies in the womb; however, to date, active viruses have not been found in the amniotic fluid, nor has it been traced in breastmilk. Some studies have concluded that newborns have antibodies if the mother was infected while pregnant (1), (2).

You absolutely can, and you probably must. Breast milk is the most nutritious food you can give your baby. Additionally, it can also protect your baby from infections. If you’re worried about the virus being passed to your child through your breastmilk, don’t be. Studies have shown that breast milk may contain antibodies if you have been infected with COVID-19 while pregnant. These antibodies are then passed on to your child while breastfeeding (3), (4).

According to the WHO, pregnant and recently pregnant women are at a higher risk of being severely ill from COVID-19. Additionally, pregnant or recently pregnant women who are overweight, older, or have a pre-existing medical condition such as diabetes or hypertension need special attention, as they often require advanced treatment in intensive care units. Women undergo several changes in their body and immune system during pregnancy, making them vulnerable to infection (5).

The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention also says that the changes and complications you experience during pregnancy due to COVID-19 may continue well after pregnancy. For example, if you have developed blood clots during this phase, chances are that this might continue even after your pregnancy (6).

Most women wonder if it is safe to have their delivery at a hospital, given that it can be a hotspot for infection. It is best to consult your doctor to make this decision. If you require a C-section, you probably won’t have much choice but to give birth at your hospital. For a normal delivery, you may or may not be allowed to give birth at home. Whatever be the case, this decision has to be made with your doctor, as it can be subjective based on your condition. Take all the necessary precautions when you visit the hospital, even if it is for a routine check-up (5).

There’s a good reason why people’s movements have been restricted — you can never be sure that the person you’re interacting with is not a positive case. It is best to avoid visitors during a pandemic, as you will be putting both you as well as your newborn at risk. This is a difficult choice to make, but it is necessary. Understandably, your near and dear ones are excited about your newborn, but times are hard, and the health of your baby (and yourself) has to be made a priority. You can still celebrate the birth of your child with your family and friends virtually, so no one misses out on anything! (5)

You should simply follow the same precautions as everyone else. Wash your hands regularly and carry a sanitizer with you. Avoid stepping out unless necessary, and if you do, wear a mask at all times and maintain a distance of at least two meters. Do not go to crowded places, no matter what — this is something you should follow, especially since you are pregnant. Make sure you are eating healthy and drinking plenty of water. Incorporate a good pregnancy-friendly exercise routine to your daily regime (5).

By asking the right questions, you can throw light on possible scenarios that you might have to deal with yourself. The pandemic can pose many challenges to all, more so if you have a medical emergency, but preparedness will give you the courage to stay calm and deal with it. The important questions that we have answered in this article are a collection of experiences by others and how they dealt with them. This will greatly help you in your own case. So, do call your doctor if you notice any symptoms. Since pregnancy in itself is overwhelming, make sure you talk to your partner or a friend when you are too anxious. In addition to your physical health, it is important to take care of your mental health as well. What do you think about this? Let us know in the comments below!
