Now that your baby is no longer dependent on your breast milk or formula milk as her only source of food, you can begin to introduce her to a whole new world of veggies, fruits and meat. While it is no doubt an exciting start for both you and your darling, you would surely want her to enjoy her meal times.

Vegetable puree for babies can be a safe and healthy start to introduce them to solid foods. With a little bit of creativity and imagination you can help her develop healthy eating habits from an early stage.

Signs “That It’s Time” To Introduce Solids:

Behavior and development in your baby will help you understand when to start introducing solids. Have a look at some of the signs:

  • See if she reaches out for food.
  • Shows interest in food and wants to know what you have in your plate.
  • Has developed good control of head and can sit upright.

  • As your baby starts learning to take her first food, you need to ensure she tastes exactly what she eats. Avoid additional sugar and salt and let her enjoy the original textures and flavors of the veggies.
  • According to doctors it is better to pick the green veggies rather than the yellow ones, as the former is less sweet.
  • It is good to start simple. Make sure you are not using strong spices in the puree like cayenne.
  • Herbs and dried spices can be a good idea, but remember to use them in smaller quantities.
  • The herb that you mix in the puree must blend well. This will ensure it does not over power the puree.
  • You can add your breast milk or formula milk in the puree to get the desired consistency. Adding fruit juice will offer a sweet tangy taste that she will certainly love. Make sure the juice is fresh.

  • Cinnamon and sweet potato creates a good pair.
  • Other ideas that you can try are: ginger and pears, cumin and carrots, parika and cauliflower, fresh mint and peas.
  • Roasting or steaming organic vegetables help retains all vital nutrients. Once these are cooked, blend them in a food processor.
  • You can store them in air tight containers in the refrigerator for maximum of three days. However, it is always better to offer fresh purees to your baby.

A Word Of Caution:

While blending the vegetables in the blender, you need to be careful of certain aspects. Here are some:

  • Allow the vegetables to cool down before you place them in the blender, as too hot veggies can completely blow off the blender.
  • Attach the lid firmly.
  • Keep a little gap to allow the steam to pass, so that it does not blow off the lid.
  • You can hold a towel in the small crack or opening in the blender. This will offer sufficient room for the steam to escape.
  • It is better to start slow and gradually increase the speed.
