Expecting a baby will make you go through a lot of physical changes, some of which might be painful or might put you ill at ease. A swollen vagina is one such disconcerting issue that will make you anxious. Though common during pregnancy, it could be an indicator of an underlying ailment that needs medical attention. It is extremely important that you learn about the reasons behind a swollen vagina and how to deal with it.

What Are The Causes?

1. Lack Of Hygiene

Failure in maintaining proper hygiene around the vaginal region can give rise to the growth of bacteria, causing inflammation.

2.Inflammation:

Inflammation in the vaginal area can lead to edema, where excessive fluid gets collected in the cavities or tissues of the body. This can result in fluid discharge.

3. Rough Sex:

Sexual act for a longer duration or a rough entry can cause vaginal inflammation or can even lead to bleeding.

4. STD:

Sexually transmitted diseases facilitate the transfer of bacteria to the vaginal region, leading to inflammation and other symptoms of the disease.

5. Allergy:

Certain products contain chemicals that may not suit your skin and can cause irritation in the vagina. The effects include itching, reddening, inflammation, and other hyper-allergic reactions.

6. Infection:

The vaginal region is mostly moist and low in temperature, which forms and ideal condition for bacteria, viruses, and fungus to breed, causing infections.

7. Hormones:

Fluctuations in hormonal level can cause an increase in the amount of vaginal discharge and shedding off of internal linings.

8. Cysts:

Cysts in the genitals can lead to vulvovaginitis, a condition that causes discharge, pain, and itching.

What Are The Symptoms?

  1. Swelling of the vagina is mostly accompanied by a lot of discomforts. You may suffer from painful blisters or sores, irritation, and generalized pain.
  1. Frequent or occasional vaginal discharge with a foul odor is also seen as one of the symptoms.
  1. Women have also complained of experiencing sharp shooting sensation while urination.
  1. The most evident sign, however, is inflammation and itching around the vaginal region.

Avoid self-medication even if you feel the symptoms seem minor and easily treatable. Any medicine you take without proper supervision can have a direct impact on your baby. So do not take any risk and consult your doctor in case of any health issue.

How Can You Prevent Swelling Of The Vagina During Pregnancy?

1. Good Hygiene:

Maintaining good hygiene is the best way to keep all types of infections at bay. Lack of hygiene makes your genitals vulnerable to virus and bacteria.

2. Stay Away From Strong Products:

During pregnancy, your body becomes sensitive to strong substances. The soap or cream that you have been using for years may happen to cause irritation or other reactions during pregnancy. The chemicals present in these products can react with the skin that leads to harmful manifestations. Discontinuing the use of these, would be beneficial.

3. Wear Comfortable Clothes:

It’s essential that you avoid wearing tight clothes as it can cause drying of vagina.

How Can A Swollen Vagina Be Treated?

1. Do Not Scratch:

A swollen vagina normally itches but you must avoid scratching. You may spot oozy lesions or inflammation around your vaginal area, and scratching will only infect the area further.

2. Keep Genitals Clean:

Always wash your genitals properly. However, do not end up over washing or vigorously scrubbing the skin because not only does it dry the skin but leads to the growth of microbes in that area.

3. Prescribed Medicines:

Once you have consulted your doctor he will prescribe you medicines to treat your condition. Doctors usually do not advise oral antifungals to expectant mothers. So you may most probably be advised topical creams. If the infection has spread over larger areas of the skin then you will be prescribed an even stronger antibiotic plan. These drugs must be taken with care since any drug interaction can have an adverse effect on the fetus.

Are There Any Home Remedies To Ease The Symptoms?

1. Ice Packs:

If you have been suffering from swelling and pain, you can try using an ice pack to help ease the symptoms.

2. Probiotics:

Probiotics are extremely effective in maintaining the right kind of flora that is required to maintain a healthy body.

3. Stay Hydrated:

Drinking lots of water ensures frequent urination. By emptying your bladder at regular intervals you can control the growth of any bacteria as urine is acidic in nature and it also reduces the spread of infection.

4. Use Garlic Paste:

Garlic is known for its antifungal and antibacterial properties. Apply garlic paste in small quantity, to avoid any burning sensation, and see how it soothes the swelling.

5. Use Apple Cider Vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar is full of antibacterial components. So next time you take a bath try adding a little apple cider vinegar to the tub of water and let your body soak in it for ten to twenty minutes.

Never ignore a swollen vagina. Seek medical attention and keep yourself and your baby healthy and safe!
