13 Things All New Parents Should Know

Becoming a parent changes your life. Your focus shifts from yourself to your baby. When you become parents for the first time, it can be life-altering in so many ways. Generally, when couples plan to have a baby, they figure out what needs to be done to be the best for their baby. They read and talk to experienced parents to understand newborn behaviors, so they will be prepared for whatever surprises they may face. But some things cannot be learned without actually experiencing them, and no matter how much you prepare, foresee, and anticipate your baby’s actions, there are things you will not know. Here are 13 things every new parent should know:

1. What Works For One Set Of Parents, Might Not Work For You, And That Is Okay!

You might not be able to soothe your baby, but your partner can. Don’t stress! You’ll eventually get the hang of it.

2. The Time You Spend In The Shower Is Precious

Getting some time in the shower might feel like a luxurious spa day, even if it’s just for two minutes.

3. Don’t Be Too Hard On Yourself

You don’t learn to be a new parent overnight. It happens with experience, time, and several goof-ups. Don’t beat yourself up for not knowing everything on the first day.

4. Your Baby Is Going To Forgive You If He/She Cries For A Few Minutes

You might have just laid your baby down to sleep in his/her cradle and stepped in for a quick shower. But before you even finish, your baby starts to cry. Don’t worry. They will be okay if they cry for a few minutes.

5. Babies Don’t Need A Lot

You might want to buy the entire baby store, but a baby is happy with a wooden box (No kidding!). They do not need a lot of toys, clothes, and other stuff to keep them entertained.

6. You Might Have A Screaming Match With Your Partner (Often)

You and your partner have different ways of doing things, and that might annoy the other. You might even end up screaming, shouting, or snapping at each other. But, it’s just the lack of sleep and perpetual exhaustion (trust us!).

7. The Mood Swings Are REAL

You might cry for no reason and wonder why, but it’s okay. There is nothing wrong with you. It’s normal.

8. Choose The Right Diapers

Not all diapers are made the same way, so when you feel like cutting down on costs, don’t do it with diapers. Cheaper ones are not the same, or better.

9. Don’t Freak Out If You Feel Disconnected From Your Baby

Not every mom and dad fall in love with their babies the minute they see them. It’s not abnormal to take a while to connect to your baby so if anyone makes you feel bad about that, tell them to take a walk (out of your life).

10. Make Time For Date Nights

It might seem impossible with a baby around but keeping the romance alive is an essential part of raising a baby together. Spare some time and have a meal together, or cook for your partner and watch a movie together after you’ve put the baby to sleep.

11. Divide And Conquer

Take the time to rest separately. Taking turns will ensure that both of you are well-rested or at least a little rested. You both don’t want to feel like zombies looking for a bed.

12. Try To Get Some Exercise

No, we are not talking about a HIIT workout or an intense session at the gym. But don’t completely neglect your exercise routine. Walk around your house or in the park. Stroll through a mall if you have one close to home. Fresh air and some time outside will put you in a better mood.

13. You Don’t Have To Listen To Anyone

When you’re a new parent, you will inevitably receive a lot of unsolicited advice from everyone. Most people mean well, but you don’t have to listen to them. Smile, nod, and let the advice and opinions fall out of your ears. You do what’s best for your baby. You are the parent, and you got this!

Being a new parent is challenging. You won’t have time for friends, night outs, or even a good night’s sleep. But you will eventually figure out what works best for you and your baby and get better at it with time. So, don’t stress. Keep calm and embrace the parenting roller coaster!
