Do you have a baby girl? Are you worried she isn’t tall enough or doesn’t weigh enough as a normal baby? Do you wonder what her ideal height and weight should be? If these questions relate to you or someone you know, you might want to read our post. Here we look at how you can keep a track of your growth chart for baby girl and know the correct height and weight in the first few years of her precious life.

Baby Girl Height And Weight Growth Chart:

A growth chart helps you to calculate or assess your baby girl’s height and weight and compare it with other babies of the same age. It will help you and your pediatrician to understand whether she is growing and developing at a regular and healthy pace. In case your pediatrician notices a variation, she will inform you of any necessary steps that may have to take.

Your pediatrician will use a growth chart to assess the following points of growth and development:

  • To measure her weight as per age.
  • To measure her height as per age. To measure her height, the pediatrician will place her on her back and measure her as she lies down.
  • To measure her head circumference. Your pediatrician will measure the size of her head by wrapping a measuring tape all around the back of the head until her baby’s eyebrows.

Once your baby is born, the pediatrician will check her height, weight and the circumference of the head. On taking the measurements, she will make the first marks on your baby’s growth chart (1)

Preparing Your Baby Girl’s The Height And Weight Growth Chart:

Once you take her home from the hospital, your doctor will schedule regular baby wellness checkups.

  • At each of these checkups, your pediatrician will measure your baby’s height, growth and head circumference.
  • For each of the checkups, your pediatrician will also keep marking the same on your baby’s growth chart.
  • As your pediatrician makes more marks at each visit, it will help track your baby’s growth and height over a period. It will also give your pediatrician an idea about how well she is growing and how well she is gaining weight. A good height and weight measurement on the growth chart will indicate that she is feeding the way she should. It will also mean that she is developing as she should be at that particular age.
  • Your baby girl weight growth chart and height growth chart will show the percentile in which your baby is.

How To Understand Baby Girl Growth Chart Percentile?

While you go through your baby girl’s growth chart, you may notice a term known as percentile. Here is how you can understand what your baby’s percentile means:

  • Let’s take an example and assume your baby’s growth chart mentions that she falls in the 25th
  • It will mean that 24 % baby girls who are of the same age as your baby girl will weigh less than your baby and 75 % baby girls who are of the same age as your baby girl will weigh more.

  • Your baby’s weight and height percentile will not always read the same.
  • For example, your baby girl’s weight may be in the 25thpercentile while her height may fall in a different percentile, for example, the 50th
  • If your girl falls in the 50th percentile, it means that 49 % baby girls of the same age are shorter in height than yours, while 50 % baby girls are taller. (2)

Tips For Reading Your Baby Girl’s Height And Weight Growth Chart:

While you may learn to read your baby girl’s height and weight chart properly, here are a few things you should remember:

  • Sometimes, it is possible that your baby’s height and growth chart has not been measured or marked accurately. It is possible if she was moving or squirming on the weighing scale or while the doctor was taking the measurements.
  • It is not accurate to assess the entire information by one measurement. For example, she may experience a loss in weight but it could be due to a recent or present case of diarrhea. In such a case, your baby will most likely gain back the weight she lost once she is well again.
  • The ‘normal’ range is usually a wide one, which offers much scope for work. For example, your baby girl’s weight measurement may fall in the 15th percentile, which means that about 85 percent baby girls of the same age weigh more than her. If that is the case, it does not mean that she is not healthy.
