Mild to moderate pain in your legs and knees and stiffness in the joints can often be successfully treated from the comfort of your home, using ingredients right out of your pantry! And science has discovered a new wonder ingredient you can add to your diet to combat painful joints – gelatin!

Yep. That strange, wondrous ingredient used in desserts.

But, first, a word of caution: Before you attempt at playing doctor, please practice some vigilance. If you’re experiencing moderate or severe pain that has been brought upon by injury, seek medical attention immediately. Certain kinds of knee pain might require advanced interventions or surgery. Also, in some extreme cases of arthritis, surgery is recommended. Please contact your doctor if you’re experiencing new pain after surgery.

That being said, if your pain is due to osteoarthritis, inflammation or some minor injury, gelatin could very well be your at-home remedy to alleviate the pain.

Having a hard time believing me?

Well, read on, for I’m about to change your mind.

Why Is Gelatin So Great For My Joints?

According to a study presented at the American Academy of Family Physicians, researchers have discovered that adding a special gelatin supplement to your diet can successfully help relieve mild knee pain if you happen to be suffering from osteoarthritis (1).

Osteoarthritis, as we all know, is the most common type of arthritis (read: swelling and inflammation of joints) out there (2). It is the natural product of aging as well as the thousand or so routine shocks that our weight-bearing joints such as the wrist, fingers, and knees happen to be exposed to (3).

Just like your favorite pair of blue jeans begins to fade out over time with each subsequent wash, the constant wear and tear that is faced by cartilage (read: the tissue that coats and aids in lubricating the ends of our bones that form the surfaces of joints) can gradually lead to osteoarthritis.

If you suspect you’re suffering from osteoarthritis, symptoms to watch out for are stiffness, pain, and limited mobility of the affected joint.

So How Exactly Can Gelatin Help My Osteoarthritis?

Gelatin is made up of collagen with a particularly high content of the amino acid (read: a constituent of protein) hydroxyproline, which helps in the growth and maintenance of the structure of our connective tissue. Since connective tissue is extremely vital for the optimum functioning of joints and bones, gelatin is an ideal food.

On top of all of that, gelatin also provides a range of other benefits:

  • Can prevent brittle bones (osteoporosis)
  • Can improve joint mobility and function and also relieve pain in patients suffering from osteoarthritis (4)
  • Can improve digestion and gut health (5)
  • Can strengthen fingernails
  • Can help improve sleep quality (6)
  • Can improve hair and skin quality
  • Can accelerate your metabolism and aid weight loss
  • Can shorten your recovery period post exercising or after a sport-related injury
  • Can lift your mood and boost your cognitive abilities (7)

In a 2000 study, researchers studied 175 patients who suffered from osteoarthritis of the knee. These volunteers were randomly assigned to either receive a gelatin supplement daily or else take a placebo. Those patients who took the supplement that contained 10g of gelatin along with vitamin C and calcium showed significant improvement in regards to stiffness, pain, and the mobility of the knee.

According to Sean S. McCarthy, MS, from the Center for Clinical and Lifestyle Research in Shrewsbury, “This suggests that gelatin supplementation has the potential to improve knee function during activities that cause high amounts of stress on the joint.”

However, before you go hobbling to your local grocery store to stock up on a vat of gelatin, it is important to note you will also need to complement that with good old vitamin C.

Yes, we can!

This recipe could help relieve the pain and stiffness in your joints and also boost their mobility. All you require is:

  • Edible gelatin x 2 tbsp. (10g)
  • Water x ¼ cup
  • Vitamin C supplement

Method

In a jug, mix the edible gelatin in cold water and keep stirring till it has dissolved completely. Store this mixture overnight, and by the next morning, you will see that the gelatin has hardened. Consume it along with your vitamin C supplement.

Every morning, you could add the gelatin to flavored or plain yogurt, milk, tea, and even fruit juices. After about a week, you will notice that the pain and stiffness in your neck, back, elbows or knees has decreased significantly. Ideally, follow this regimen for a minimum of 1 month. Repeat the treatment after 6 months.

Before you start any new treatment or regimen, it is important to consult your family doctor or health care provider regarding the same. Stay healthy!
