Raise your hands up in the air if you’re one of those who grew up listening to your mom’s and grandma’s advice of keeping all the beauty products in the fridge. Did they tell you that storing all your beauty supplies in the fridge will lengthen its shelf life? Yeah, we’ve been told the same thing too.

Like most of the advice that we receive from our elders, there’s a teeny-weeny kernel of truth in this too. It can definitely be beneficial to store our beauty products in the fridge, but only sometimes. However, like all pieces of advice, this one also comes with a caveat. When you think of storing your beauty supplies in your fridge, you need to segregate the ones that really require a chilly atmosphere to retain their optimum freshness, from the rest. One pro tip for this is to think of all your makeup products like it was your food; for example, storing oil in the fridge is a bad idea, right? Yes, think similarly when it comes to makeup as well.

So, here’s a breakdown of what beauty products should be and shouldn’t be stored in your refrigerator. Read on to know more.

1. Oils

Never ever make the mistake of storing your essential oils in your fridge. Not only will they harden to acquire more grease-like texture, but they will also lose their natural healing properties. This is because if you want to use it again; you’ll have to warm them up. And in this process, the beauty benefits of it might just vaporize away.

2. Eye Creams And Gels

Not only will keeping the eye creams and gels in your fridge make them last longer, but it will also increase their cooling effect on your eyes. The cold temperature of the eye creams and gels will restrict the blood vessels of the eyes from swelling up, thereby, reducing the puffiness of the eyes. It’s the best thing to do as soon as you wake up in the morning. Your eyes will feel refreshed and less strained, making you feel ready to take on the new day that has just begun.

3. Eye Pencils Or Lip Liners

If it’s really hot outside and you need to sharpen your kajal or eyeliner, or lip liner, it’s better to put the pencils in the fridge before doing so. Keep them in the fridge for half an hour. This will make it easier for you to sharpen the pencil easily since the tip won’t be smudged because of the heat. Just be careful if you’re using the pencil on the inner rim of your eyes so that you don’t end up damaging your eyes with the hardened tip.

4. Anything And Everything That Reads Organic

Organic and homemade beauty products need to go straight in the fridge. If you’re wondering why, well, it’s simple. They are chemical-free and preservatives free, therefore, they must be kept in the fridge to retain their chemical and structural integrity. However, always check for the expiry date on the packaging of these products.

5. Lipsticks

Don’t place them in your fridge. This is because the ingredients used in the lipstick when refrigerated tend to separate and also the condensation will make the lipstick lose its moisture. This will end up making our lips dry and chapped. However, if you accidentally break or melt your lipstick, you could refrigerate it for a few minutes to allow it to retain its shape.

6. Facial-Mist Or Spray

Applying a refrigerated facial spray is definitely a win-win for your skin. It feels more refreshing to spray a cold facial mist than the ones kept at room temperature. It soothes your dry, inflamed skin. This is best if you’re someone who has dry skin.

7. Sunscreen

Yes, you read that right. It’s always a good idea to stock up your leftover sunscreen lotions from the summer in your fridge. Leaving your sunscreen tubes or bottles outside will lessen their SPF effect over time. So now you know that it’s okay if you end up buying more than one sunscreen because they were on a good offer; you can always keep them in the fridge.

8. Nail Polish

Storing them in your fridge can definitely lengthen their shelf life – this is something that our mothers told us, and they were right about it. But, here’s the catch-the viscosity of the nail polish takes a hit when you refrigerate it, and you can’t even heat it to get the consistency back as nail polish is super inflammable in nature. Therefore, it’s best to store your lacquers at a cool place in your room instead of keeping them in the fridge.

Apart from this, another thing which we would like to highlight is that refrigeration is different from preservation. If a cosmetic product doesn’t have preservatives, it’s very likely that you cannot increase its shelf life by keeping your precious makeup products in the fridge.
