11 Biggest Cellulite Myths You’d Better Stop Believing
In today’s world, cellulite is considered as a woman’s greatest nemesis. However, this was not always the case in the past. In fact, up until the end of the 20th century, men would consider it sexually appealing if a woman had cellulite on the region of her thighs and buttocks!
Err, where can I find a time machine, please?
Media has played a great role in making cellulite the enemy to a woman’s beauty. Even the cosmetic industry has started developing products to reduce the visibility of cellulite on a woman’s skin, which further emphasizes that 21st-century beauty notions can never be synonymous with cellulite.
But cellulite affects more than 80% of women at some point in their lives (1). And though almost everyone wants to know how to get rid of cellulite, it is equally important to know what causes cellulite as well as the 11 myths associated with this condition that the media wants you to believe!
1. Cellulite Affects Overweight People Only
Cellulite can affect anyone, regardless of his or her weight! The appearance of cellulite is related to the genes you inherit from your parents as well as the hormones produced by your body (2).
2. Cellulite Appears Only After You Cause It To
Although there are a lot of factors that may cause cellulite to appear on your body, sometimes it simply appears without any cause. You may take excellent care of your skin, maintain a healthy diet, and still notice cellulite on your skin. This ties in with the previous point that cellulite depends on genes and hormones as well.
3. Losing Weight Can Help Get Rid Of Cellulite
Although this statement is not entirely false, it is important to know that losing weight can only help reduce the visibility of cellulite. Dropping this pounds alone won’t actually help you get rid of cellulite.
4. It Is Impossible To Get Rid Of Cellulite
Even though there is no permanent solution to get rid of cellulite, there is a long-term solution. ‘Cellfina’ is an FDA-approved treatment that gives you freedom from cellulite for up to three years (3).
5. Cellulite Is A Sign Of Aging
Many people believe that cellulite only affects adults. Furthermore, people believe that cellulite is actually a sign of aging – an insecurity that causes women to become extremely afraid of cellulite. However, cellulite can even affect teenagers.
6. Sun Rays Help Reduce Cellulite
In reality, sun rays merely help reduce the visibility of cellulite on your skin. They do not help in any way whatsoever of actually reducing cellulite.
7. Anti-Cellulite Creams And Other Skin Serums Can Remove Cellulite
You should not believe everything you see, especially if the topic being discussed happens to be cellulite. These creams/serums only help increase the strength of your skin. Most of them do not do much when it comes to getting rid of cellulite.
8. Cellulite Only Exists In One Form
Skin specialists believe that there is a minimum of two main forms of cellulite: dimpled and rippled. It is important for you to identify the type of cellulite that is affecting your skin before you undergo any treatment for it. This is because of the fact that the different forms of cellulite have different treatment processes (4).
9. All The Bumps And Lumps That Appear On Your Skin Are Caused By Cellulite
This is not true. Cellulite causes indentations and nodules to develop under the skin. It is extremely important to know whether or not your skin is indeed affected by cellulite before you begin any treatment for it. The best way to do so is to visit a dermatologist or a skin professional and have them examine your skin.
10. Not Everyone Faces This Problem
As mentioned earlier, more than 80% of women witness cellulite on their skin at some point in their lives.
11. Cellulite Only Affects Women
Possibly one of the biggest myths regarding cellulite: it only affects women. However, as most of the points mentioned in this article, this is not correct as well. Although men generally possess tougher skin than women, they are still at risk of developing cellulite on their skin (5). Whether it may be due to rapid changes in weight, hormones or genetics, men can develop cellulite as well.
At the end of the day, cellulite is only as bad as you perceive it to be. It is something that most people have to experience at some point in their lives, and if you are willing to accept this fact, it does not matter what the society or media say about cellulite.
