You might be right to assume that every kid avoids doing chores. I mean, we don’t prefer them either but when it comes to chores, we got no choice. In the same way, teaching kids to take on simple chores around the house helps them build responsibility and develop a habit of helping out. It is one habit that is important to be inculcated right from childhood to make their adult lives easier. That being said, there is no denying that kids do not like to lose their playtime by doing chores. But as parents, it is your responsibility to incorporate that into their routine and find something that they like to do so it doesn’t seem too bad. Every kid is different and they are bound to like something that makes them helpful around the house. So, to make it easier for you, here is a list of chores you can find to get any type of kid to do:
- Chores On Special Occasions
These are the kinds of chores that, if not done, is not too bad. But hey, your kids don’t need to know that and that’s what makes it the best kind of chores for them to do. Here are some things that they could help with:
- Set the table
- Design place cards
- Put fresh flowers in the vase
- Arrange the cut fruits in a platter
- Create centerpieces from naturally found items
Kids love a change of routine so they are excited to have guests visiting their homes. During this time, you could ask them to take up a few tasks like these and give them a free hand at it.
- Chores That Are Fun
Chores are a great way to activate interests in your kids and find what they like. By helping around the house, many kids tap into their deep interests and passions and even end up enjoying these tasks that you find mundane. For example:
- Pair up socks and arrange the sock drawer
- Help organize the silverware into cabinets
- Water the plants, help wash the bikes or cars
- Help hand out the tools in the garage
Helping out in the kitchen, gardening with parents, and learning about tools and cars in the garage are things kids like to do. They find it adventurous and fascinating at the same time so they are bound to engage.

It is a good idea to ease your kids into tasks that demand a bigger responsibility as they grow older. Your kids might be ready to take on simple yet fulfilling tasks that might not necessarily be fun but they will be rewarding. Here are some of the things that they can do:

- Sweep the floor
- Brush and feed the pets
- Dust surfaces

Such chores encourage kids to do more because they get to see a result. When they make a sandwich, they get to eat it. A happy well-fed puppy smiles and plays with the kids after they feed it. In such cases, your kids can see the result of what they’ve done and that is fulfilling in itself.

Now comes the big ones. These are the chores that have to be done regularly. They are not fun to do and most kids complain about doing them. Some parents also give their kids a chance to earn their allowance by doing these chores. They include:
- Unloading the dishwasher
- Taking out the trash
- Cleaning out the kitchen slabs
- Clearing out the table
- Washing dishes
- Tidying up their rooms
When your kids help you with these chores, it reduces your workload to a large extent. Therefore, when your kids help you out, there is no harm in thanking them for their help and extending your appreciation.
