Becoming a new parent is an incredible experience. You want to be at the top of your game when it comes to making your child laugh and smile. Making this even more accessible are the plethora of toys and gadgets available in the market that keep your baby entertained. However, the thing you need to be cautious about is that not all of these toys are safe for your kid. Some of these might even cause more harm than good. Same goes for other baby products and food too.

If you’re still wondering about what toys or things could possibly hurt your kids, then scroll down to make yourself aware before stepping out to buy them at the store.

1. Baby Walkers And Jumperoos

Though these items had been designed to help babies learn the concept of walking quite smoothly, the damage they can cause is not worth it (1).

Both baby walkers and jumperoos have already been banned in Canada. In the USA alone, there have been a reported 8,000 cases of baby injuries. Additionally, the human body is supposed to grow at its own pace. When you provide your baby with a support device making it easier for them to walk, you hinder the natural process. This may result in the uneven strengthening of muscles. The best practice is to consult your orthopaedist about taking necessary precautions.

2. Milk And Juice

Preservatives are not a good option even for adults, let alone kids. Fruit juices packed in tetra packs have added preservatives and refined sugar lacking the true essence of a natural fruit. If consumed excessively, these juices may lead to major dental problems, and not to mention, obesity.

A baby should be fed only with breast milk, and even after you’ve stopped breastfeeding them, try and avoid cow’s milk at all costs, as it might be too heavy for the baby to digest. It could eventually lead to health complications like anaemia or dysbacteriosis.

3. Warm Clothes

Babies being babies, lack the thermoregulation advancements which are present in adults. This makes them susceptible to overheating eventually leading to heat strokes (2). Additionally, wrapping your baby in too many warm clothes hinders the body’s ability to develop a defence mechanism against the changing weather. Problems like a low level of immunity become fairly common in children.

4. Electronic Gadgets

This one is a no-brainer, isn’t it? The blue light from LED sources can cause retinal damage, cataracts, blindness, and macular degeneration (3). The extensive use of smartphones and gadgets may deprive your child of the real world, leaving no room for his sensory and motor skills to be developed. A lack of live interaction results in an underdeveloped frontal lobe which is responsible for personality, speech, decision-making, and communication.

5. Seat Belts

Though seat belts are meant to save you in case accidents happen, such might not be the case when you’re pregnant. Wearing a seatbelt incorrectly may end up causing harm to your child. Hence, make sure that you place the lower strap of the seat belt below your belly area so that it does not put too much stress on your amniotic sac.

Try to sit in an upright position, or better yet, do not drive at all unless it is essential.

Although it is imperative for you to ensure that your child is having a good time when exposed to all of life’s joys, it is necessary for you to be aware of the pros and cons as well. Make sure you monitor your child if they’re around using the above-mentioned toys and gadgets. Stay safe!
