If your baby has arrived in the world, you might already have a fairly good idea about baby rashes. Despite being a common problem among babies, the diaper rash not only upsets the mom but also irritates the little one.

So, if you come across a red patch on the little one’s bottoms while changing his/her diaper, it is important that you are aware of the treatment and method to avoid recurrence. More often than not, this involves only some basic care. But, at times, it becomes difficult to figure out the root cause of the problem. More so, if the rashes appear on the skin due to food allergies.

More About Diaper Rash

Diaper rash is a skin disorder that is pretty common among infants. Almost 25 percent of the toddlers and infants suffer from this infection. And, diaper rash is seen mostly in babies between nine and twelve months of age (1). So, know that you are definitely not alone when it comes to diaper rashes.

Somewhere, this ends up affecting the quality of life of both the parents and the children. Even if it is a mild rash, it can cause discomfort to the baby. And, make parents feel miserable since they want to help out but don’t know what to do.

First and foremost, you should be on alert about the common causes of the baby rash. Be it your little one wearing a soiled or wet diaper for a long time or the diaper not being gentle enough. So, it is vital that you pay attention to few basics when it comes to diaper change before you start hunting for other causes. Here are some of the simple care tips:

  1. Ensure that you change the little one’s soiled or wet diaper immediately. This is one of the best ways to steer away from diaper rash. And, be more vigilant if your infant is suffering from loose motions since you might have to change the diapers much more frequently.
  1. You can also use a protective lotion or ointment, which can be applied right before changing the diaper.
  1. Let your baby breathe free, without any diaper, whenever he/she is at home. This will help expose his/her bums to fresh, breezy air.

If you have looked out for all the obvious signs and still can’t figure out a reason, you can look out for other factors that may be responsible for the rash. Here, we bring you those other factors:

  1. There are certain qualities of baby wipes or diapers that might not suit the little one’s skin. So, if you come across skin irritations while using a particular product, you can opt for another.
  1. At times, certain detergents, which are being used to clean cloth diapers, are the main culprit. But, if the laundry detergents are the reason, you are likely to find rashes on other parts of the body too. So, if you have found the product that works for your little one’s delicate skin, don’t switch unless necessary.
  1. You can find rashes also in cases where the little ones are suffering from some food infection or allergy. But, again, you will find other signs that indicate an allergy. So, be on a lookout for such food aversions.

No matter how much you try, there are still chances that your little one may still develop rashes. If you notice any rash, you can clean the affected area using a gentle soap or cloth. Don’t rub that area. But, in case you notice the following symptoms, reach out to your doctor:

  • If the rashes stay for more than three days
  • If it becomes worse
  • You also notice a fever
  • If the skin doesn’t stay intact and keeps breaking off

If you have any more doubts in your mind, don’t hesitate to approach your pediatrician. He/she will have all the answers you are looking for. Good luck!
