If you’ve never had a love bite, all you want to do is get one. Once you’ve gotten one, however, you realize that you’re going to see your parents soon, after which you’re getting in the car with them to pick up your little sister from college, after which you’re all going to your overly concerned grandma’s well lit house for lunch. Your uncle will be joining you there. Oops!

Luckily for you, there are a few ways that you can get rid of the love bite fast, in fact, there are a dozen ways. So if a high collared T-shirt won’t do the trick, waste no time in reading on!

1. Ice

A love bite is basically the result of kissing or sucking the skin too hard which causes capillaries to break and results in the pooling of blood which causes the skin to turn beautiful shades of red and purple. To disperse the blood, take ice and wrap it in a towel or polythene bag and apply it to the affected area. The hickey will disappear in no time at all.

2. Peppermint

Peppermint is a wonder herb and when rubbed on the surface of the skin, it induces warmth that heals capillaries and vessels, and increases blood circulation. Meaning no more hickey.

3. Rubbing Alcohol

Alcohol can lead to the getting of a hickey, and it can help make it go away as well. Alcohol is a disinfectant and works it’s magic in soothing the wound and cooling down the stinging. Just make sure to moisturize, as alcohol will make your skin dry.

4. Rubbing With A Toothbrush

Take a fresh toothbrush (just saying) and rub the hickey gently. The blood flow in and around the hickey will increase, meaning that fresh blood flows into the area. The discoloration will slowly fade away leaving you with no incriminating evidence and major embarrassment!

5. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is nature’s gift to mankind. It’s uses are wide and varied, but it’s role as an excellent anti inflammatory agent is what will make it an excellent hickey removal agent. Be warned though, it will take a day or two, so if you have a particularly nasty hickey (wink, wink) and the weekend to cool off, you’ll want to be applying fresh pulp straight from the plant 2-3 times a day.

6. Banana Peel

Not as well known as the aloe vera, but just as good. Peel a banana and place a piece of the inside of the peel on your love bite. You’ll want to cut a piece the size of your hickey. Again, this is best done 2-3 times a day for optimum results.

7. Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter isn’t the most readily available of hickey removal agents, but if you have some, take a little bit and apply it to the hickey. It will help the damaged tissue regenerate and will promote renewed blood flow into the area. If you don’t have any cocoa butter handy, almond oil or olive oil will work as well.

8. A Warm Compress

No, we’re not contradicting ourselves. A cold compress works well in the hours after the hickey has been planted (or right after), but a warm compress is to be applied after 48 hours, when the broken capillaries have had a chance to heal themselves. The warmth will increase the blood flow in the area, meaning that the clot will be absorbed faster.

9. Orange Juice

Drinking plenty of orange juice helps heal the love bite, since OJ has a lot of vitamin C, which is in fact excellent for skin (just think scurvy) and a whole lot of other things. Do note, you’ll have to have freshly squeezed orange juice, not the packaged stuff, for best results.

10. Massages

Gently massage the affected area after applying a warm compress to help break down the clot and increase blood flow. Massage from the centre outwards and be gentle!

11. Arnica

The arnica montana plant is used to make several medicines and extracts, one of which is an ointment which reduces swelling and pain, and helps repair the damaged capillaries. Arnica ointment is easily available at your local homeopathy or medical store.

12. Toothpaste

Toothpaste is more versatile than we think. It helps fight cavities and nasty mouth disease, and can be used as first aid for minor burns, and helps get rid of your hickey. Look for a mint toothpaste as the cooling property of the mint and the toothpaste will help the clot get re-absorbed that much faster, leaving a hickey free you. Once the tingling from the toothpaste has died down, wash it off with some warm water.
