Remember all those diaper ads with cute babies and soft tinkling music? The ones in which everything looks white and the baby’s bum is totally clean all of a sudden like magic? Yeah, that’s just an advertisement- the true nappy changing story is a little different. A crying baby, a confused you, and diapers that never get placed properly is more like the real picture. You may not be able to make the process as cute as the one shown on TV, but you can surely try and make things a little easier.

Here are 6 diaper changing hacks that will turn your nightmares into bearable reality:

1. A Changing Station

It’s important to set up a changing station before your baby is born so that the whole diaper changing process becomes much easier. If your house is of multiple floors, set up a changing station on each one of them. This is because moving up and down with a newborn baby while you’re still recovering from the delivery is very difficult.

2. Pack A Diaper Bag

Always pack a diaper bag and keep it near the changing station. This bag should contain everything that you will need to clean, wipe, powder, change, and dispense. As soon as you change the diaper of the baby, re-fill the diaper bag. In case you’re going out, you can take this bag along with you. Don’t forget to pack extra sets of diapers- yes, babies go too many times a day.

3. No Distractions By The Side

Don’t keep anything on the changing station or near to it so that the baby will steer clear of sweeping them down. The baby might even turn to the sides to get hold of the flashy something that has caught their attention. This can make the diaper changing process pretty time consuming and annoying for you. On the other hand, a distraction- like a toy or a few bells can be hung down from the top at a safe distance so that your baby will look at them and lie down facing up. This will get you some peace while you’re at the task.

4. Convenient Height

Make sure that the changing table or the place where you are changing the diaper of the baby is at a convenient height. It shouldn’t be too low because the whole process is going to take quite some time and you don’t want to hurt your back. This can get quite difficult when you’re traveling with your baby in a car. Stop the car or slow it down considerably if someone else is driving so that there is no mishap while dealing with the poopy pants.

5. Undress Your Baby The Right Way

When you’re dealing with a soiled diaper, undress your baby from the top down. Try to stick to baby clothes that will allow you to do this. Instead of buying frocks and single piece garments, try to get two piece clothes. This way, even if anything gets on the bottom piece of the garment, you can still keep the top one.

6. The Right Fit

Make sure that the diaper isn’t too tight since it can hurt your baby. Not even you can stay comfortable if you wear a tight pair of pants- how do you expect your baby to do so? The baby’s skin is so much more sensitive than yours and a tight nappy can actually leave marks and cause rashes. You may be trying to fit it right so that you don’t want the nappy to come off after some time. But if it’s too tight, you may have to remove the whole thing and re-do it again.
