Age brings along the two Ws with it – wrinkles and wisdom. While we accept the latter happily, the case is not the same with the former. Though there is no way you can actually stop the natural process of aging, it is possible to delay those fine lines from showing up on your face.

Quite often, it’s because of your daily habits your skin has to suffer so much. Yes, you read that right. Some bad habits cause damage to your skin, and they also cause premature wrinkles on your face. Here are 4 beauty habits that are really bad for your skin.

1. Over-Exfoliation

Exfoliation is one of the best ways to get rid of dirt, dead skin cells, oil, and other pollutants from the skin. You can do it twice or thrice a week max. But if you overdo it, it can be harmful. Over-exfoliation can disturb the pH balance of your skin and steal its moisture.

Moreover, if you scrub very hard, it can also damage the fine layer of the skin. This leads to cracks and can result in wrinkles on your face.

2. Hot Showers

Hot showers are obviously a great solution to open up clogged pores and clean them up, but prolonged exposure to hot temperature is not at all good for your skin. It leads to dehydration and also removes the coating of natural oils from the skin. Hot water erodes this layer of oil and exposes the skin, causing premature aging. Thus, make sure you do not spend more than 4-5 minutes under a hot shower. It is best to opt for warm water to take a shower.

3. Excessive Cleansing

Cleansing is the most important part of a good skincare regimen. But overdoing it can harm your skin. It triggers the elimination of natural oils and thereby promotes dehydration. As the moisture level of your skin decreases, it eventually leads to the formation of wrinkles on the face and neck.

4. Applying Heavy Makeup

We usually apply makeup to hide fine lines, dark spots, or acne since it is one of the quickest and easiest fixes. However, applying it daily can negatively impact your skin. When you apply makeup using a makeup brush, it spreads the acne, making the surrounding areas prone to infection. It also puts pressure on the skin cells.

Another mistake we do with makeup is this. When it comes to application, we put in a lot of effort. However, when it comes to removing it, we are too lazy and generally tend to go to sleep with the makeup on. This is one habit we must avoid at all costs. If you feel too tired to go to the dressing table and remove your makeup, keep cleansing wipes near your bedside. You can remove your makeup without even getting up from your bed! Makeup contains chemicals, and prolonged exposure to these chemicals can harm your skin.

Apart from these, there are a few more teeny-tiny practices that often contribute to the list:

1. Avoiding Sunscreen

We often assume applying sunscreen is optional. But, in reality, it is one of the most important things you should do. Skipping this step can cause skin damage. Even a few minutes of exposure to the sun can cause the breakdown of collagen, and this leads to the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Thus, if you want to protect your skin from damage, wear sunscreen regularly.

2. Under Moisturization

Since the skin is one of the most sensitive parts of our body, it needs proper care, attention, and moisturization. Overexposure to the sun and applying heavy makeup can deprive your skin of moisture. Every time you wash your face, make sure you apply a moisturizer to keep your skin nourished and supple.

3. Improper Sleeping Positions

Your sleeping position also plays a major role in maintaining the health of your skin. When you sleep on your side, with your face over the pillow, it absorbs all the moisture from your skin, leaving the face dehydrated. Hence, you must sleep on your back.

4. Smoking

There are a number of reasons to quit smoking, and now, we are giving you another great reason to quit this habit – smoking makes you look older. It restricts the blood flow, making it difficult for the skin cells to absorb oxygen and essential nutrients. The chemicals in cigarette smoke break down the skin’s fiber and elastin, leading to the appearance of fine lines around the lips.

5. Inadequate Sleep

You must sleep for around 7-8 hours a day because while you sleep, the body helps the muscles to relax, repair, and rejuvenate themselves. Thus, proper sleep is very important to maintain healthy and glowing skin. Inadequate sleep also causes stress, which again leads to wrinkles and fine lines on the face.

6. Poor Nutrition

Eating healthy food helps you age gracefully. People with vitamin deficiency usually look older than their age because of their loose skin. Hence, proper nutrition is a must. You can drink orange juice daily.

Always apply natural ingredients on your face, such as honey, rose water, milk, etc. They not only prevent skin aging but also add a natural glow to your face.

Now that you know which habits can cause harm to your skin, stop practicing them ASAP. Little changes go a long way, and making these changes will keep your skin pretty, always.
