Here’s When Your Doctor Can Predict Your Baby’s Gender

Alright, we know this one’s been done to death, and newer gender prediction techniques are being devised every second. This development should tell you that most new parents guess, fight over, and in some cases try to determine what the unborn baby’s gender will be. So, whether its a girl or a boy, the question here is, how soon can you learn whether you’re having a baby girl or a boy? Read on to find out.

Here are some tests that help your doctor determine your child’s gender.

1. Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis is a genetic test, which helps determine an unborn’s sex as early as 11 weeks into pregnancy. However, you must know that this test is invasive, and is not prescribed to most pregnant moms, except when the woman has chromosomal abnormalities. Typically, babies begin to develop gender-specific body parts around the 12th or 13th week of pregnancy, which makes it hard to determine a baby’s gender at 11 weeks of your term. But, each pregnancy is unique, and we cannot set a rigid timeline.

2. Self-initiated ultrasound

This is the new fad in the world of gestation and baby gender determination. A self-initiated ultrasound, as it sounds, is when the mother opts for a sex determination test. While standard doctor-recommended ultrasounds happen at the 20th week of pregnancy, many companies offer ultrasounds earlier than this time. These tests are viewed with a jaundiced eye by many experts, and some companies even offer guaranteed gender-determination or your money back schemes.

3. Doctor-prescribed ultrasound

Unsurprisingly, doctors find this to be one of the most accurate tests to determine a baby’s gender. However, don’t be fooled. Pregnancies are unique to every mom, and you shouldn’t hedge all your bets on this ultrasound scan. Advancements in medical science have ensured a 90% accuracy, but no doctor can say 100% that you’ll have a girl or a boy. Guess somethings are better left as surprises.

However, the general thumb of rule that doctors ask pregnant moms to follow is quite simple. The longer you wait to determine your unborn baby’s gender, the more accurate the results are.

*Note: In some countries like India, gender-determination is illegal, because of the high rates of female infanticide. So, make sure you know about the law regarding gender-determination, as ignorance may land you in jail.
