We all know the good popular adage, An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but we are offering you an exciting twist to this adage. How about, A good kiss a day keeps the doctor away? Although all the elders might come at us with the broom of moral policing to sweep away this “sinful” thought, we have more than one reason to pay heed to these words and go ahead. A kiss is considered to be the most beautiful expression of love and desire. But science has backed this magical expression of love with some facts that work in our favor to reap wonderful health benefits. Yes, you read that right, kissing your partner is actually beneficial to your health. Looks like we have more reasons to kiss our partners now!

1. Kiss Away The Hay Fever

No kidding! As science has it, a 30-minute long kissing session can actually subside the symptoms of hay fever, the allergy that’s caused by pollen or dust (1). For all those years of fear of transferring germs to each other and keep our lips virgin, here’s another fact— studies show that a good kiss can prevent the growth of the immunoglobulin E antibodies in the blood (2). Why is this important, you may ask. Well, the presence of these antibodies gives rise to the release of histamine, which leads to allergic symptoms like watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing.

2. Kissing Reduces Blood Pressure

Well, too much kissing can pump the blood to the wrong (read: right) places, but generally kissing can calm your hypertension down (3). Making out doesn’t just get your heart racing emotionally, it also gets it revved up in a healthy way. So, it lowers your blood pressure and dilates the blood vessels. Consequently, the blood flows in a steady manner to all the vital organs in the body.

3. Kissing Is Great To Beat Cramps And Headaches

If you have menstrual cramps or a hammering headache, all you need to do is kiss your partner (4). Nobody in their right state of mind and the bad state of aches would want to get into a hot makeup session, but trust us on this, the blood vessel dilation brought out by a long smooch can actually ease the pain. Instead of curling up in an achy ball of pain, ask your partner to curl up next to you and kiss away that pain, literally! No wonder Enrique Iglesias sang, I can be your hero, baby, I can kiss away the pain.

4.Kissing Fights Cavities

What comes to your mind when we say, a marathon of kisses? Like a smooch-a-tho? Well, whatever that picture is, put that into action because it could get you a lifetime of freedom of keeping the dentist away. That’s right, kissing can keep cavities at bay. When you kiss, there’s a lot of salivae that’s secreted (I know it sounds gross when explained like that) and that’s exactly the mechanism that gets rid of the plaque on the teeth that’s responsible for cavity formation (5). Who’s got the time to gargle anyway, when you can kiss away the cavity?

5. Kissing Amps Up Your Happy Hormones

Often, we see characters in movies heating up the screen with passionate kisses and lovemaking even when their characters are facing a crisis in the movie. Well, there’s a reason to that too. When you’re feeling stressed or depressed, and exhausted, all you need is a little happiness, right? Lovemaking and kissing can release these happy hormones —the serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin(6). It helps you to revitalize, relax, and refresh. It makes your brain feel good.

6. Kissing Burns (A Few) Calories

No, you can’t miss the gym and stay back home kissing your partner, hoping that it will help you burn calories, but you can always add to your calorie burning spree. On an average, a vigorous makeup session, (like the ones you probably see in the movies and get uncomfortable because your parents are around) can burn up to 2-5 calories a minute (7). As long as you are completely engaged in the makeout sesh, rest assured that you are burning calories. So, how many minutes are you going to go breathless for today? *wink wink*

Additionally, kissing is a barometer for sexual compatibility too. Before you get into your birth suit and before you get warm between the sheets, kissing can be an excellent way to determine if your partner is sexually compatible. Also, apparently, kissing can give you a facelift (kind of). (8)When you’re busy engaging the tongue and the facial muscles in a wrestling match with that of your partner’s, you are actually helping your facial muscles tone up. Pretty good, eh? That saves us some money!

With all these health benefits, there’s no reason why one shouldn’t be kissing!

Now we know why Shawn Mendes sang the song…Without your kisses, I’ll be needing stitches. If one’s been deprived of kisses and the associated health benefits of kisses, they would rather stitch their lips up! What do you think? Are you going to use these benefits to your advantage now?
