Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and no man or woman would dare to disagree with it, would they? And one must take care of their best friend! While diamonds are renowned for their cut, clarity, and brilliant shine, they are also known to lose that shine just as easily. So what can you do to restore your precious diamond ring to its former pristine condition? There is always the option of getting it cleaned professionally, but that might set you back by a few thousand rupees. Also, it might not be convenient in case you need an emergency cleaning done for a special occasion or event. Worry not, we are here to make your diamond work for you. After going through several jewelry maintenance manuals and doing research online on the upkeep of jewelry, we have prepared an easy-to-follow 3-step routine for cleaning a diamond ring that is sure to bring back its twinkling sparkle.

Materials Required: A soft bristled brush, a microfiber cleaning cloth, and a mild dish detergent.

Step 1: Soaking It In The Cleaning Solution

First of all, we would like to specify that even though diamonds might be the hardest substance on earth, they still need to be handled with extreme care and caution. For this step, use a very mild detergent. You need to soak the ring in a mixture of this mild detergent and warm water a night before you intend to clean it. Remember, mild detergent only, don’t use any abrasive substances containing chemicals like chlorine or bleach.

Step 2: Brushing The Dirt Away

After the ring has been sitting in the solution for about 24 hours, take it out and using a toothbrush with soft bristles, gently brush the dirt and grime away. While doing so, remember to brush the inner side of the ring as well, this is the part that is always in contact with the skin and collects sweat and stains. For rings that have intricate latticework, take special care to brush in between the different design elements. Again, and we cannot say this enough, diamonds are precious stones and though they are quite durable they can sustain damage in the form of chips and nicks, so use a brush which has soft bristles. Also, don’t brush it too vigorously.

Step 3: Drying It Off

Now that we have laid down the cleaning strategy for you, we have also found a few tips to maintain that alluring shine. These tips also hold good for general jewelry maintenance.

  • Keep your gemstones away from the sun: Just as the sun’s rays affect our skin negatively, it has a similar impact on colored gemstones. Over time, sun’s heat and light can affect a gemstone’s color as well as its structure. Gemstones such as amethyst, topaz, etc., are likely to fade or get damaged if exposed to the sun for too long. Other delicate materials like pearls can get bleached in excessive sunlight.
  • Keep your gemstones in temperature controlled safe: Excessive heat and random temperature changes can also fracture some gems. This happens because the heat can dry out the natural moisture in these gems which gives them their unique beauty.

  • Don’t use chemicals around your jewelry: Everyday products such as perfume, hairspray, lotion, and several other cosmetics contain chemicals that can damage precious metals — gold, platinum, and silver. Take care to not expose your precious jewelry to such chemicals, for example, remember to take it off if you are going swimming in a chlorinated pool.
  • Have information about the specially treated gemstones: A number of gemstones undergo special treatments to maintain their color and clarity. These treatments can be affected by heat, steam, etc. Therefore, it’s important to know about these treatments in advance so that you can take proper precautions.

  • Use the cleaners available in the market with caution: A number of jewelry cleaners are available in the markets that claim to give you the professional experience at home. However, you must be wary of these claims, the vibrating mechanism of such cleaners can lead to the chipping of the gems. It can also loosen their setting. Also, not all gemstones are suited for such a cleaning.
  • Always store your jewelry properly: Even though a diamond is quite durable, it can get scratched by another diamond so don’t keep two pieces of jewelry together. Try to store your jewelry in jewelry boxes that have individual, padded slots to keep single pieces of jewelry. While traveling, make sure that your jewelry is packed with sufficient padding to prevent it from getting scratches.

That’s all there is to it folks, follow these steps and your diamond’s shine will be maintained for an eternity. Do you know of any other tips or tricks to clean or maintain diamond jewelry at home? Do let us know in the comments.
