Motherhood is a beautiful feeling. And when I say ‘beautiful’, I just don’t mean the emotional changes – feeling close to the baby, becoming more caring, or more responsible; I am also talking about feeling physically beautiful.

During your term-time, your body’s curves become fuller and the pregnancy vitamins add a lot of smooth glow and lustre to your face and hair. It might also have to do with the fact that when you are pregnant, you automatically slow down your pace of life and give your body some much-needed rest. Naturally, compliments start flowing from your near and dear ones!

But all said and done, there are also some annoying things that happen to your body during pregnancy. Well, they happen to every to-be-mum, so it is really not an issue to talk and discuss them. Moreover, in this age of social media, just one query posted by you brings about hundreds of well-meaning suggestions and it makes you feel you aren’t alone in this. In fact, you get a lot of insights as well as cool tips to manage them better.

Given below are four such unpleasant facets of pregnancy that you may have to deal with during your term.

1. Nausea And Sickness

Nausea and sickness, especially in the mornings, mostly dominates the first trimester and can be very distressing. But there are ways by which you can ease the discomfort.

Consuming ginger infused tea in the morning can be quite comforting. Additionally, you can munch on dry snacks to keep off the vomiting bouts. Have more of protein in your diet and avoid food with strong flavours and high fat or spice content, which can aggravate the symptoms.

Some women also swear by fizzy and carbonated drinks that soothe the feeling of nausea. However, if you think you are not able to keep anything down or are losing weight and feeling extremely weak, immediately consult your doctor for any possibility of a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum (1).

2. Being Constipated

Many women feel constipated during their pregnancy term, especially if they are on iron supplements. The only way to cope with this problem is to make adequate dietary changes. More water, fibre, fruits, green leafy vegetables, and smoothies that suit your pregnancy palette are some great means to ensure softer bowels. You must also aim for moderate exercise to keep your digestive system active.

3. Pregnancy Induced Haemorrhoids

Another discomfort that is usually associated with constipation is haemorrhoids. The best way to prevent it is by avoiding prolonged sitting that puts pressure on the blood vessels present in the rectum and the surrounding area.

You could alleviate the symptoms of haemorrhoids by applying baking soda or witch hazel cream/gel/pads topically, which reduce itching and bleeding. Also, having an active lifestyle and proper diet is highly recommended.

4. Skin Issues

Despite the pregnancy glow, you could face skin issues like itching, flaking, and eczema that can be quite upsetting. It could be because of the hormonal changes that make your skin very sensitive. It is better to avoid any soap, detergent, or cleanser that contain harsh chemicals, and artificial perfumes which may cause such skin irritation. Go for natural and organic moisturisers and cleansers that do not have an adverse effect on your skin and instead, keep it glowing and brimming.

Pregnancy surely causes some discomfort and awkward changes to your body. But the fulfilment and experience that you enjoy during this phase is much greater than such episodes of temporary unease. So, if you are facing any or all the above issues, follow the abovementioned tips and enjoy a smooth and enriching pregnancy term!
