Oily hair is frustrating because it looks dirty and dingy. No matter how many times you wash it, it becomes oily post-shower. Oily and greasy hair is the result of excessive secretion of sebum by the sebaceous glands present on the scalp. While a little bit of secretion is healthy for your hair, too much can lead to oily and greasy hair.

There are a number of other reasons as well that cause your hair to become oily very soon. Some of them are stress, hormonal imbalance, eating excessive oily and fatty food, genetic predisposition, pollution, some hair care products that contain ingredients that you are allergic to, etc.

Fortunately, there are a few miraculous ingredients that can help you combat the problem of oily hair. All these ingredients are easily available and very simple to use. And guess what? The answer lies in your kitchen! Let’s see how you can treat this pesky hair problem.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

  • Two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
  • Water

Take two to three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and mix in a liter of water. Mix well and keep it aside. Now, shampoo your hair, and then apply the apple cider vinegar solution to your hair. Rinse your hair with water. You do not have to apply conditioner again, but if you wish to do so, do it before applying apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is known to kill the bacteria that produce oil. It also reduces hair fall and gives a shine to your mane.

2. Egg

  • 1 egg white
  • Lemon juice

The egg hair mask is one of the most common and simple hair masks to use for combatting oily hair. It is a great source of fat and protein and keeps your hair moisturized for a long time. The egg white contains bacteria-eating enzymes that cleanse the scalp and hair properly. To prepare an egg mask, take the white of an egg and add 2-3 drops of lemon juice to it. Beat the mixture until it becomes frothy and then apply it to your hair and scalp. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave it on for around half an hour. Rinse your hair well with cold water and then rinse with a mild shampoo. Apply this twice a week, and soon, it will show results.

3. Baking Soda

  • 5-6 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 1 cup of warm water

Baking soda cleanses the hair like a shampoo and softens it like a conditioner. To prepare the baking soda hair mask, mix baking soda with water. Then, start applying it your scalp and the length of your hair. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Wash your hair with shampoo. Try this twice a week.

4. Banana

  • 2 bananas
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon of honey

Banana is rich vitamins, carbohydrates, and natural oils, and when you apply it to your hair and scalp, it makes your mane shiny and glossy. To prepare A banana hair mask, take two overripe bananas and blend all the ingredients together. Make sure there are no chunks left. Apply this mixture to your scalp and hair and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Wash it off with shampoo. The banana will not only take away the greasiness, but it will also help in conditioning the hair.

5. Yogurt

  • 2 tablespoons of yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of coconut oil

Yogurt is rich in proteins. It offers nourishment to the hair and helps in making it healthy and strong. It also has moisturizing properties that help in conditioning the hair. The lactic acid present in yogurt cleanses the scalp and clears away the dead skin. To prepare the yogurt hair mask, combine all the ingredients and start applying the mixture to your scalp and hair. Leave it on your hair for around half an hour and then wash it off with shampoo. Applying conditioner is up to you. You can even skip it because yogurt helps in moisturizing your hair. Apply it twice a week.

6. Cornstarch

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 empty salt or pepper shaker

How To Apply

Applying cornstarch is probably one of the best ways to fix oily and greasy hair. Moreover, you need not even apply it as a hair mask. You can use it directly as a dry shampoo. To use it, take a tablespoon of cornstarch and pour it into a salt or pepper shaker. Sprinkle it on your dry hair and leave it on for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, use a hair brush and brush it out of your hair. Cornstarch will absorb all the greasiness.

Oily hair can be treated easily at home using these remedies. But, if these remedies do not help you, it is best to consult your dermatologist.
