7 Mistakes That Cause Your Makeup To Fade Rapidly

Isn’t it frustrating when you spend hours in front of the mirror in the morning, choosing the perfect shade of eyeshadow and matching blush and lipstick, and by afternoon it just fades away? It’s just so annoying and absolutely discombobulating, for as any logical woman would ask – why would the makeup fade if you haven’t actually washed it off? After all, makeup is made to stick to your face, right?

But the truth is, some products aren’t. And as time passes by, they easily fade away. Also, sometimes we tend to make some basic makeup mistakes, which do nothing but ensure that the longevity of your makeup is reduced. So, here’s a list of mistakes that we may be making, according to makeup experts from around the world!

1. Ignoring The Primer

Applying primer before applying makeup is akin to creating a base to which your makeup can stick. And here’s the best thing – it makes sure that there are no dry patches or oily patches on your skin, giving your makeup a uniform base to stick to. The best thing about primers is that applying it on your skin ensures that the moisture is locked in so that the makeup sticks to your skin longer. There are many brands of primer in the market. The trick is to find one that suits your skin type.

2. Not Using Setting Spray

If primer is the base on which to apply makeup, then setting spray is the sign-off that must happen after the application is complete. Just like artists spray waterproof sprays on their works of art after they are done, the same must be done with makeup as well, where the purpose is to lock in the look and prevent it from running. Setting sprays contain a chemical called PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone). This makes sure that your makeup doesn’t melt or crack, or run even if you accidentally spray water on it.

3. Skipping The Translucent Powder

Before the setting spray, comes the translucent powder. Experts swear by it and say that once your primer, foundation, and blush been applied on to your face, translucent powder must be applied for the magic to last. Like all powders, it makes sure that your face doesn’t turn shiny. And here’s the most important thing – you must apply it using a proper fluffy, big brush. Apply it on your chin, nose, cheeks, and forehead because these are the areas that tend to become shiny the most.

4. Not Checking The Foundation Formula That You Are Using

Unless your foundation is in sync with your skin type, chances are that your makeup will be sliding right off. But thanks to an avalanche of foundations in the market, choosing the right one can become a bit of a hassle sometimes. The best way to do this is to first determine your skin type – oily, dry or combination – and then the kind of effect that you want the foundation to have – satin, matte or ‘shimmery’ (also known as dewy). For a satin finish on dry skin, you should opt for a foundation that is hydrating so that your skin may find the right balance.

5. Wearing More Makeup Than Required

If you are applying too much makeup, that also isn’t a very wise thing as excess makeup tends to cake up and crack, making it look like you have wrinkles. Yikes! The best thing to do is to apply lightweight makeup and do the usual primer-foundation-mist routine. You can also use a highlighter or blush to make the makeup last longer.

6. Applying Foundation Carelessly

Most of us like to go the shortcut way and apply foundation with our hands. This is, however, the worst thing that we can do when applying foundation because our hands’ temperature can break down the composition of the foundation, causing it to melt and, therefore, not last long. It is best to use a beauty blender to do this.

7. Not Having A Set Skincare Routine

Many of us make the mistake of simply applying makeup and not doing anything to ensure that our skin is in the best health. Makeup can only do so much to make our skin glow. Unless the glow comes from within, there is nothing any amount of makeup can do. Hence, to prevent this, you need to make sure you do a few things religiously. Exfoliating dead skin cells and using a face mask that hydrates and suits your skin type are the two most important things when it comes to proper skincare.

So, now that you know what steps you can take to keep your makeup from fading, try out what suits you best and let us know how it went for you in the comments below!
