Why Do We End Up Trusting Chemical Filled Cosmetics Over Natural Remedies – My Thoughts
Aren’t cosmetics essential for us women? Like most women, I’ve always been on a lookout for new and safer cosmetics that could enhance my appearance. Cosmetics help us feel a lot more confident about our pale skin, help us feel refreshed when we have sleepless nights, and they make us feel all pretty whenever we feel out of shape. The cosmetics market is one industry which will forever be growing. There’s cutthroat competition in this segment because there’s always an urge to provide the best results.
Skin is the only organ of our body that extends from top to toe. Also, it is the most sensitive part. And we have enough resources in the form of journals, studies, and debates that go about how to take care of it — the natural way or the chemical way with the help of cosmetics. Of course, natural remedies do help in the long run but I somehow still opt for the chemically laden cosmetic products for my skin. But, before I explain why, allow me to brief you about what exactly a cosmetic is.
What Is A Cosmetic?
They are products which are designed to protect, cleanse, and enhance the appearance of the external parts of our bodies or to alter the body odors that we produce. Also, there’s a thin line between cosmetic and therapeutics. The products that claim to modify a bodily process or prevent one are called therapeutics. For instance, a shampoo is considered as a cosmetic, but anti-dandruff or an anti-hair fall shampoo is considered to be therapeutic. Now you’ve got the difference, right?
What Are These Cosmetics Made Of?
There are a few common ingredients when it comes to chemical-based cosmetics. They include water, preservatives, moisturizers, fragrances, colors, and emulsifiers. And these ingredients can be both natural as well as artificial.
Now, here’s why I think most of us end up trusting chemical filled cosmetics over the natural remedies:
1. Regulation And Safety
The import, manufacturing, and use of chemicals in the cosmetics are all governed by certain rules that are laid out by the specific country’s governmental agencies. Every ingredient used in the cosmetic is assessed by the regulations laid out by such agencies to make sure that the final product causes no harm to the users whatsoever. So, you know it’s safe for use.
2. Tells Which Skin Type It Suits Best
All the chemically laden cosmetics go through a copious number of tests. After which it declares as to which skin type it suits best—dry or oily or combination skin types.
But with natural remedies, you never know which natural ingredient you are allergic to and whether or not the remedy is going to leave your skin flaky or oily. For me, the sandalwood face pack (homemade) always tends to leave my skin oily.
3. Very Handy To Use On The Go
It’s portable. You cannot make and apply a face pack or a cream on the go, right? The very thought of it is hilarious. But the cosmetics are ready to use and these can get you ready for a party in a jiffy.
4. Chemicals Are Useful!
Did you just give question my sanity? But, yeah, they are useful peeps. Say, for example, retinol and similar vitamin A derivatives are a favorite among dermatologists as it can do incredible things to your skin (1). The same goes with niacin-amide and peptides, they keep you away from any allergic reactions which is a major concern when it comes to any beauty treatment (2).
5. Results Are Quick
I’m someone who looks forward to instant results or let’s say waits for the magic to happen. And treating your skin with homemade remedies takes time (days, weeks or maybe even months). But, the chemical ones promise quick (and sometimes, even instant) results.
They aren’t time-consuming as well, they are ready-to-use cosmetic products. With natural remedies, you need to awaken the patient side in you. Get the fresh ingredients from the nearby store, mix them up in right proportions, apply them, let them dry and then wash them off. That’s a whole lot of work, don’t you think?
6. Lured By Fragrance
I don’t know about you all, but a good smelling product instantly catches my attention. There’s something about a good fragrance, it calms your senses and makes you feel good. You have to admit that natural remedies don’t really smell that great unless its got rose water or sandalwood in them.
7. Hygienic Packaging
While using natural remedies or therapies on our skin, the hygiene concern is solely on our head. It’s our responsibility to make the face packs or the face creams in the most hygienic way and preserve them correctly so that it doesn’t inculcate any foul smell or get spoilt overnight. The chemical ones are packaged well, making our lives easier.
This is what makes me trust the chemical cosmetics over the natural home remedies. Do you agree or disagree? Leave your answers in the comments below.
