9 Parenting Tips To Keep Your Child Safe
As they say, silence is suspicious when a toddler is at home. If you are a parent, you will probably relate to this; children attract accidents. The moment they slip out of your vision, they are always up to something. Even with your best care and supervision, you will find yourself helpless at how kids manage to get hurt physically. Even so, there are things you can incorporate that will help to minimize the accidents and keep your child safe. We have covered it all, from fighting contagious germ attacks to making skid-proof tools. Read on to know them all.
1. Cover All Sharp Edges
Honestly, it’s easier said than done. The first year will go easily when your baby is merely learning to stand up. But the moment they learn to walk, you will be left with no time to baby-proof the house. The secret is to not wait till your baby can actually move about and make changes on their own. If they see a corner saver attached to the side of the table for as long as they can remember, the urge to rip it off will be much less. They are also very expensive if you buy them all at once. If you are good with DIY skills, you can use pool noodles as tools to cover the sharp edges.
2. Pool Noodle Shopping Handle
It never hurts to be more careful! If you are a parent who takes frequent trips to the shopping mart with your kids, you will notice that children are thrilled with the idea of pushing the cart or sitting in it. While you are concerned about germs, the best idea is to carry a pool noodle with you and cover the handle. This way, your child will be thrilled with the colorful handle, and the chances of contracting germs diminish.
3. Cover All Electrical Outlets
Kids are by nature curious, and they are very inquisitive about electrical sockets. Before they get ideas about putting their finger in the holes, make sure you cover them with tape when left unused. Also, teach them not to play with switches from a very young age.
4. Invest In Anti-Tip Straps For Your Furniture
The moment your child learns to walk, the first thing you should do is remove all pieces of decorations that can pose a threat to your child. This includes pieces made of glass or other breakable materials, pieces that can pose a threat of choking hazard, and those that can fall on them and cause injury. The same goes for your furniture as well. For example, if you feel there is a risk of the cupboard, shelf, or shoe rack falling on them, simply latch them to the wall with anti-tip straps. This will keep your baby safe when they learn to walk as they tend to hold objects to gain support.
5. Use Anti-Skid Rugs
Kids mostly run from place to place and, in this process, fall if the surface is slippery. If you have door mats and rugs in your house, making them skid-proof will keep accidents and mishaps to a minimum. You can also place suction mats in bathrooms to ensure your kid stays safe after a bath.
6. Role-Play To Teach Them How To Make A Call In Case Of Emergency
Even with your best care, there might be a situation when you are not with your kids, and they need to contact you. They need to be taught how to react and reach you during such times. You can teach them in the form of games and role-plays where they reach out to people in uniforms, like a security guard or a police officer. Ask them to memorize your name, address, and phone number. They can have the details in their bags for safety.
7. Check The Temperature Of The Bath
This may sound obvious but never ever dip your baby in the bath before checking the temperature yourself. Do not trust your hands alone as they are accustomed to higher temperatures. Instead, use your elbow and dip it in the bathwater to determine if it’s safe for the baby’s skin.
8. Invest In Skid-Proof Socks
Kids dressed in socks at home often skid and fall due to the lack of friction on the polished floor and their socks. The answer to this is getting skid-free ones. If you have already got socks that don’t have rubber linings, you can make them with the help of a glue gun! Simply apply a few wave designs and dots on the sole of the sock and let it cool.
9. Dress Your Kids In Bright Colors Outdoors
This may sound absurd, but you will do anything and everything for your kid when you are a parent. Toddlers tend to break away from you and explore public places on their own. Even if it’s a safe place like a baby-friendly café or a museum, having kids dressed in bright red and yellow will help you keep an eye on them even when they are far from you.
The safety of your child may be your primary concern but you have to understand that they are kids, and even with your best care and supervision, they will get sick occasionally and get hurt. So make sure you teach them the importance of being careful and how to treat a wound with first aid. Do you have any safety tips that you would like to add to the list?
