Are you pregnant? Do you think that your breasts have started smelling different? Don’t worry because it is totally normal. Pregnancy can bring about a lot of changes to your body and a difference in the way your breasts smell is experienced by many. It’s not just your breasts, you may feel like your whole body stinks even after taking showers and changing clothes every day. This is not your fault and you are not really stinking.

What Actually Happens?

Some women develop a strong sense of smell during pregnancy and they might feel a stronger aversion to certain smells like that of meat and dairy products (1). There you go! That’s your superpower for the next nine months. While this superpower can be really useful to spot a delicious cookie-baking place in the street, it has its disadvantages too. A very small percentage of the women who have a heightened sense of smell during pregnancy pick up their own scent and get annoyed because of it (2). This is probably why you feel your breasts are smelling different.

Have you ever wondered why others can’t get it when you say you’re stinking? This is because their sense of smell is not as strong as yours. These kinds of situations can be embarrassing for you and you won’t even know when you’re actually smelling bad because you’re going to be really confused.

What Can Be Done?

Try to take regular showers when you feel sweaty. Use your favorite bath gels and scrubs and pick up the ones with a really good scent. Also, you can try getting flowers, potpourri, and air fresheners into your room to make the whole place smell better. If you feel you don’t like any particular smell, no matter how good it used to be in the past, get rid of it. The smell might make you nauseous and you may end up feeling sick.

Another thing that you can do is to get your clothes regularly washed and change them once or twice a day to stay fresh and clean. Try using fabric conditioners with pleasant fragrance so that your clothes smell good too.

Nipple discharge during pregnancy may occur to some women and it is completely normal (3). This discharge is clear during the early stages of pregnancy and it turns into a milky one by the time you enter the later stages.

It’s Not Just Your Breasts

It’s not just your breasts that you feel are smelly during pregnancy. You might feel that your intimate area smells too. This is because of the increased mucus secretion in the area during pregnancy (4). While this is quite normal, make sure that you get it checked by a doctor in case of itching, burning, or if you feel that the odor is too bad. Sometimes, the odor can occur as a result of yeast infection in the genital area (5).

Even after reading everything about smelly breasts and body odor during pregnancy, there is a high possibility that you are not convinced. So, the best option is always to talk to your doctor about what you’re experiencing even if it is the slightest of the issues. That’s what doctors are there for! Make a list of what kind of odor you are experiencing, the color of discharge in case of its presence, and the instances during which you feel that the odor and discharge are more. Share this with your doctor so that you can explain your concerns better. It is wise to clarify things than to worry thinking about something that is random and uncertain.
