Russian Artists Use Makeup To Create Optical Illusion
The below image may seem like two different feminine faces are posing against one another – a dark profile against the background of a steady white one. If I tell you this is a deception of your perception, would you agree? In reality, it is a single face. The optical illusion of two women was created on a model’s face using simple painting techniques and makeup integrated with a brilliant and huge imagination.
Such wonders were created when photographer Alexander Khokhlov and retoucher Veronica Ershova paired with makeup artist Valeriya Kutsan to form a formidable team. The Moscow-based photographer cannot resist the temptation of the blur between 2D and 3D images. This gave birth to the various series like Art of Faces, 2D or not 2D, Angry Beards, and Weird Beauty.
This image may be mistaken as a reflection on the face, a play of light, or a painting. But, in reality, this is an optical illusion created by using foundation, powder, pencils, and brushes on a beautiful face, exploring the possibilities of brown and shades of earth.
A little off-hand imagination, a passion for pictures, and painting skills using makeup create wonders on peoples’ faces. They can be transformed into beautiful art, comics, pop art, cartoon characters, paintings, etc.
In the Art of Faces series, the team worked together to create this body of work, capturing subjects as surreal versions of themselves and making their faces look like two-dimensional images. According to Alexander, “Valeriya used different techniques of face painting so you can see a lot of variations – from sketch and graphic arts to watercolor and oil paintings. This is a combination of interesting makeup, studio photography experiments, and careful retouching.”
