How The Season Your Baby Is Born In Affects Their Personality And Health
What if we told you that the season in which your baby is born could tell you a lot about their personality and health? No, we’re not a bunch of astrologists trying to sell our trade with some mumbo-jumbo. This isn’t about the way the planets aligned at your child’s birth or mercury being in retrograde either. Our claims have a reasonable scientific basis to them. We’re talking seasons and science, pregnancy and personalities! Yes, seasons do play a significant role in how healthy your child will be. Are you ready for a glimpse into the future of your child’s health, solely based on the season the little one was born in? Read on if that’s a yes!
Babies Born In Spring
It’s that time of the year when flowers bloom in all their glory, making for the prettiest of pictures. There’s always a sense of hope during spring, and we all love it, but guess what’s in the air during this time? Pollen. This means that spring babies may potentially be at a higher risk of developing allergies. In a study conducted at Berkeley, it was found that babies born in March, April, and May, tend to have allergies, asthma, and other similar respiratory infections in the long run (1).
On the upside, your spring-born baby is bound to soak up a lot of sun, which means the little one may have a happy personality. Research suggests that sunlight helps elevate moods, so brace yourself for a bundle of joy (literally) (2)!
Babies Born In Summer
As we mentioned above, sunlight can help elevate your mood. Summer is hands down the sunniest time of the year, so children born during the summer are less likely to suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD is a kind of depression that is primarily influenced by the changes in seasons, and more often than not, it begins in the fall and goes on through winter (3).
Studies say that babies born in the summer are probably the healthiest compared to babies born in other seasons. It was observed that summer babies had a healthier birth weight, were taller, and reached puberty slightly later than those born in other months (4), (5).
Babies Born In Autumn
An interesting research concluded that babies born in autumn often lived longer than those born in other seasons. Studies have also shown that these babies tend to reach menopause a lot later. This is probably because women who are pregnant during summer have higher reproductive hormones, so when their babies are born in autumn, the newborn tends to have more eggs, thereby delaying menopause later in life. Since the mothers of autumn babies got pregnant around summer, there’s not a lot of summertime sadness for our autumn arrivals either. They’re also less likely to suffer from bipolar disorder (6), (7), (8).
Babies Born In Winter
One major downside to being born during cold wintery months is the fact that these babies turn out to be grumpier. As we mentioned, sunshine equals happier moods, so its lack has the exact opposite effect. According to a study conducted by researchers from the National Academy of Sciences, Princeton, babies who are due to be born in winter are also more likely to have premature births. However, winter-born babies are inclined to be more creative as opposed to their summer and spring counterparts. These babies also tend to be less irritable than other babies (9), (10).
The environment is part and parcel of our everyday life, so it makes sense that the season your baby is born in can play a significant role in the health and personality of your child. Having said that, it doesn’t mean you have to plan your child’s birth based on seasons. Although backed with scientific evidence, more research is needed for it to be conclusive. Besides, several other factors play a role in your child’s health, such as genetics, pre-existing health conditions of the parents, and the nutrition and care provided to your baby after birth, to name a few.
