4 True Stories About True Love

Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.

The great bard, Shakespeare, made this canny observation in one of his very popular comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The quote loosely translates to mean that true love is not found with the faculties of logic or rationality, but rather with the faculty of imagination.

But we are the children of 21st Century, right? We don’t believe in the love of this kind, rather should I say, we have been given no reason to believe that love of this kind does exist. For us, love blossoms over fire selfies on Instagram, and really dope Tinder bios. Believe me, I too, am a product of this world and shared this pretty cynical view of romance, that is, until I came across these heart-rending accounts of true love. Don’t believe me? Read them and see for yourself!

1. The One True Love Which Inspired Him To Literally Move Mountains

What’s the hardest thing that you had to do for your beloved? Well, whatever your answer is, I am pretty sure it can’t equal Dasrath Manjhi’s, 22 year-long, herculean project of cutting apart a mountain to make sure no one ever has to suffer the loss of love the way he had to.

Early in the 60s, Dasrath, a resident of a small village called Gelaur, in the Gaya province of Bihar, was an ordinary man, happy to live in his humble circumstances, with the love of his life, Phalguni Devi. Until, one day when she fell ill, and he had to rush her to the nearest hospital. She died on the way. She would have had a fighting chance had she reached the hospital on time, but the 25 feet high, 360 feet long rock that lay in the way made it impossible.

After an incident like this, any smaller man may have resigned himself to a life of bitter cynicism, but not Manjhi. For 22 years, he toiled with his bare hands, to reduce that rock to dust, resulting in a very unassuming but larger-than-life monument to love (1).

2. When This Man Traversed Halfway Across The Globe…On A Cycle

Born into an “untouchable” community, Pradyumna Kumar Mahanandia, better known as P.K. Mahanandia, always knew that he was destined for a great love, owing to a prophecy. An astrologer had predicted that PK would not have an arranged marriage, rather he would marry someone who was from a faraway land, owned a jungle and played the flute.

As luck would have it, PK had this prophecy fulfilled when he met his would-be wife, Charlotte Von Schedvin, a Swedish national, who wanted to get her portrait made from him, in Delhi, where PK was working as a street artist. What followed was an instant connection and a whirlwind love story that culminated into a wedding ceremony, conducted according to the tribal traditions.

Soon it was time for Charlotte to go home. PK decided to stay back and work to establish himself. The two corresponded over letters for almost a year, but when that couldn’t satisfy the pangs of love, PK decided to take the matters in his hand.

He sold his meager belongings and bought a bicycle and decided to cover the distance between Sweden and India on that bicycle. Pedaling on that cycle for five months, coupled with hitchhiking, traveling through Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey, PK finally reached Europe. Once there, he met Charlotte’s parents and got, officially hitched (2), (3). Talk about an epic love story!

3. This Power Couple Whose Love Laid The Foundation Of An Empire

When they first met, no one had an inkling that they would be such an incredible couple who would go on to change the course of history. It is said that behind every successful man, there’s a woman. And nowhere does this saying come as close to fruition as in the Murthy’s case.

Sudha and Narayan Murthy are an iconic couple who are known today as the founders of the Indian software giant, Infosys. What isn’t common knowledge is that it was Sudha’s hard work (she literally gave her hard-earned money to Narayan Murthy) that laid the foundation for the company. While she found her calling as a writer, she is often asked if she felt bad about sacrificing her career to further her husband’s dream. To this, Sudha Murthy as a very simple answer. She says that while programming and working at Infosys was her ambition. Infosys meant more than that to her husband and for her, and that was more important (4).

So rethinking your Tinder choices, are you? Same.

At the age of 24, Turia Pitt, a resident of Australia had a pretty sorted life. She had completed her Bachelors in Mining, she was blessed with a healthy body and she had also found her special one. But all this changed in the blink of an eye when she got caught in a grass fire, while competing in an ultramarathon, in 2011.

She suffered 65 percent burns to her body, and had to remain in the hospital for almost two years, and undergo over 200 surgeries.

All this while, Michael Hoskin, her boyfriend, never left her side. He supported her through this tough time and they finally ended up getting engaged in 2015. Today, they are a happy family which includes their son, Hakavai Hoskin (5).
