Research team at Northwestern University first recorded zinc emissions at the moment of fertilization. However, the study, as most others, was conducted on mice.
Now, for the first time ever, a team of scientists captured the exact moment when the sperm meets the human egg. The explosion of light isn’t just a pretty barrage of colors and lights, but turns out to be helpful for future research.
As federal law prohibits the use of sperm in human research, the team used sperm enzymes to reach to one stunning conclusion. When sperm meets egg, sparks fly. Moreover, the brighter the spark, the better the quality of egg.
According to the study author Teresa Woodruff, this imagery could help with future infertility treatments.
What it means is that as soon as you see the zinc spark at the time of fertilization, you will know which eggs to keep for IVF. Zinc plays a major role in the growth and development of any genetic organism, and testing the zinc spark helps determine an egg’s viability like never before.
The study promotes better egg selection and an earlier determination of an embryo’s viability, thus making it easier for couples to take a decision.
There are no tools to measure the quality of an egg, unless a pregnancy ensues. So, the ability to learn first-hand whether the egg is viable will not only help you determine any problems with the egg, but also let you plan better.
