9 Surprising Baby Products You Don’t Know You Need
Once a couple comes to know that a new arrival is on the way, they begin planning a lot of things well in advance. Shopping for baby apparel, making the house baby safe, and stocking on diapers and baby care products are few such things. However, there are certain products which most soon-to-be parents might not be aware that they’ll need. So, here’s a list of things which are absolutely necessary eventually, yet they wouldn’t have occurred to you:
1. Colic Medicine
Infants mostly cry due to hunger or soiled diapers. However, if your healthy, well-fed infant cries for more for than 3 hours a day for 3 days a week, then it is probably colic. Colic is caused due to various reasons including gas and is really uncomfortable for infants (1). Therefore, make sure to get a good brand of anti-colic medicine to help you during those difficult nights. Check with your doctor for the same before buying one.
2. Anti-Colic Feeding Bottles
New parents are spoilt for choice while choosing baby bottles. With so many brands on display, make a wise choice. Go for bottles that have a vent and feeding tube inside for your infant. This vent-tube set-up makes sure your baby sucks in milk gradually and does not get gas while feeding.
3. Pure Water Wipes
Don’t get carried away with cheap deals for your baby wipes or promises of them being ‘safe’. Some wipes, despite being non-alcoholic, can still be harsh on your baby’s delicate skin due to the presence of fragrance. Go for wipes that contain pure water only. And makes sure that the fragrance too is very mild as if just a drop or two of it has been added.
4. Stain Remover
You might not have thought about this one, we’re sure! With the amount of spilling and spitting that your baby does, you’ll surely need a good stain remover for your baby’s clothes. And, let us not forget the diaper explosions (God save you on this one!). Just add a dash of stain remover to your regular baby detergent while washing and you’re done.
5. Portable Diaper Caddy
Of course, you have a diaper bag which you’ll use every time you step out with your baby. But what about at home? A diaper caddy has more storage compartments than a regular diaper bag. This makes it quite convenient for you to store them and move it around at home.
6. Closet Dividers
It is common for new parents to buy new clothes for the baby. Some of them are also gifted by their families. However, parents soon lose a track of them in the pile-up and the baby would have outgrown some of them by the time they are discovered. So, what do you do? Just store them in the closet and use the dividers to sort them age/size wise. This way you’ll not miss them when your baby grows old enough to fit in them.
7. Diaper Rash Cream
This is one of the most important items that should be on your list. A diaper rash can occur any time, so keep it handy always. Make sure you apply a generous amount of it (externally) on your baby’s rear after every diaper change.
8. Baby Stroller Attachable Hook
Yes, this simple innovation makes your life a lot easier. All you have to do is attach this hook to your baby’s stroller handle. This way you can hook your handbag, snack bag, or even a water bottle whenever you step out with your baby.
9. Soothing Baby Massage Cream/Oil
Soothing a crying baby is an art which you’ll soon master. One such tool to help you is a good baby massage. In fact, massages are believed to encourage mother-baby bonding, control an infant’s stress hormones, and helps the infant relax and sleep well (2). So, buy a good herbal oil or a proven safe massage cream. You can also check with your doctor if need be. Just make sure you use light strokes and do not massage your baby immediately after feeding.
