Being a new parent is tough. After the nine months of absolute vigilance that you kept, you are now faced with a new challenge – being vigilant regarding the health of you precious, a new found bundle of joy. And the prospect is scary, we’ll agree. After all, there is just so much that could go wrong. And if you’ve already imagined and wondered the worse, then don’t be afraid, for you’re not alone. The key to tackling this new chapter in your life and laying your greatest fears to rest is simply to prepare! Below are seven signs that can help you nip your child’s illness in the bud:

1. Mole growth

If you notice an irregular spot on your child’s body that varies in comparison to his skin color, then you should take this as a sign to get your boy checked by a doctor. If your child already has a mole, ignore this advice, unless it starts to grow in size.

2. Hair loss

Hair loss in children is responsible for more than 3% of pediatric office visits in the US. There are several reasons for a child to start losing hair, whether it is bald patches on certain regions of their head or general thinning in their hair. The good news is that most cases of hair loss in children are easily treatable and are usually caused due to lack of vitamins. If you notice your child showing signs of hair loss, take him to a pediatrician to diagnose the root cause of the problem.

3. Mood and behavior swings

Is your child acting strange all of a sudden? Has his appetite reduced? Did he stop following his sleep cycle or is he by chance not as active as he usually is? These are all signs of childhood depression and are important reasons to take your child to a doctor to help treat this serious mental health condition.

4. Increase in head size

All babies are born with small, soft spots on their heads known as fontanelles. These spots are a result of your baby’s head contracting in size in order to squeeze past the birth canal. These spots disappear over time as your child’s bones develop and their skull starts to take shape. However, if you notice that your child’s fontanelles are not going but in fact increasing in size, it may be a sign of a disease and you should take them to the doctor immediately.

5. Decreased hearing

If your child does not respond to you when you call them out by their name or request them to perform a task, it does not necessarily mean that they are trying to ignore you. Your child may be showing signs of hearing problems. It is important to show your child to an ENT specialist in order to improve your child’s hearing as they may have problems in language development.

6. Continuous thirst

Now we know it is really important for a child to stay hydrated in order for their body to carry out tasks that help them to grow into a strong and healthy being. However, excess consumption of liquids could mean a sign that your child may have diabetes and should be taken to a doctor immediately.

7. Loud snoring

There is a difference between your child snoring (which is completely harmless) and your child snoring loudly. If he is showing signs of the latter, it could mean that he is suffering from some kind of breathing difficulty. In such an event, take him to be examined by your physician in order to get a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Though it may seem like a daunting task to constantly monitor your child’s mental and physical condition and continuously searching for signs of any illness, it’s always better to catch any problem in the early stages of its development. As they say, mommy, a stitch in time saves nine!
