For every expecting mother, childbirth is one of the most crucial moments of her life. Ever since she hears of the news, she waits for the day when she will finally get to hold her baby. Unfortunately, at times, complications arise. However, at times, a woman’s strong determination to ensure her baby’s safety can even turn the fate around. And, that resolve is strengthened even more if you have a loving and supportive partner by your side. Here is one such powerful example of the same.

Vanessa and Nick Fisher felt strongly about prenatal care as well as birth options. Sometime back, during Vanessa’s pregnancy, a doctor had suggested turning her breech baby through an External Cephalic Version (ECV) procedure. Not only did the couple agree to it, but they also shot and shared the entire procedure with everyone. This video went viral and was watched by nearly three million people within a span of a few weeks.

Let us give you a clear understanding of what we mean when we say “breech” baby. This occurs when an infant is positioned inside a woman’s womb in such a way that his/her feet are toward the birth canal. This is in contrast to the “normal” birth, where babies will automatically position themselves head-down before the due date (1).

When you look at the video for the first time, 29-year-old Vanessa doesn’t appear to be in a lot of pain during the procedure. However, that wasn’t the case. Of course, the procedure wasn’t easy and was painful enough. Already a mother of an 11-year-old boy, Vanessa and her partner knew about their baby being breech since the 28th week.

When the situation continued to be the same even after 37 weeks of pregnancy, Vanessa was asked to consult a doctor by her nurses. Till then, she had already attempted a few methods at home to turn her baby, but none seemed to work. Vanessa had decided that even if the procedure was not successful, she would still continue with her natural, home birth plan. However, she did want to give the procedure a shot once.

Vanessa’s doctor was completely understanding and even gave the couple some time to take a decision about the procedure. Meanwhile, he explained in detail about the ECV process, and also the potential risks it entailed. But, her conversations with her doctor made her realize that it was more important to bring a healthy baby into the world. How her little one arrived was secondary.

Finally, with a resolution to ensure her baby’s well-being, Vanessa agreed to the procedure. Yes, the pain was intense and you can notice her even holding her doctor’s hand in the video. Though subtle, her reactions to the sore spots are visible. However, she believed in the doctor and knew that she was in safe hands. In fact, the speed with which he completed the procedure also impressed Vanessa. And of course, the success of the surgery gave her the peace of mind that she really needed.

Nick and Vanessa decided to share the video because they thought it was essential to spread awareness about the condition. Also, to make others aware that there is a way to deal with this complication and there are professionals out there who will help them with the same. Their effort to inform everyone about the same is commendable!

As a mother, you will understand how it is always a priority to ensure your baby’s well-being. Above anything else in the world. So, if you know that there is a way in which you can better your baby’s life, you will always go for it! Cheers to all you mommies out there!
