A lot of girls and boys think of their future baby’s name even before they plan to get pregnant. We’re totally guilty of doing the same. However, you have to take your partner’s choice into consideration and when you actually come around to having that baby, thinking of a name can get pretty darn overwhelming. For starters, you have to think of a bunch of names depending on the sex of your baby. Following that, your friends and family will most definitely give you their suggestions. For example, surely you yourself have tried to convince your best friend or sister to name their kid after you!
There is no right or wrong when it comes to picking baby names, you and your partner just have to love it. That being said, below are a few points that parents often think about before naming their baby. Who would’ve thought that picking a name could have such a detailed and somewhat of a complex process? How The Name Sounds
In our opinion, this is probably the first element you should think about when picking a baby name. It’s simple – just think about how the name sounds when you want to call your baby or introduce them to somebody. Does is it sound weird? Does it sound harsh? Is it easy on the ears? Does it sound funny with your last name? According to studies, “some parents think longer first names work better with shorter last names, while others think the opposite.”
Also, a lot of parents plan how their baby’s first name ends so it goes well with the last name. For example, having a vowel at the end of the first name and the beginning of the last name sounds weird when you say it together.
How Unique Is The Name
In today’s day and age, many parents want a name that is unique, distinguishable, and noticeably different to the names of our generation and the generations before us. For example, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s kids are named North West and Saint West and Gwyneth Paltrow and Christ Martin’s daughter’s name is Apple! Weird, right? But at least no one can forget these names, as they are the epitome of unique. However, on the other side of things, these kinds of names can bring unwanted attention, perhaps some bullying, and of course, let’s not forget about all the possible mispronunciations.
Picture yourself and your poor kid forever correcting people. For example, one mom says, “I guess it’s time for me to face it. My daughter, Isla (pronounced ‘eye-la’), is going to be correcting the spelling and pronunciation of her name and cursing us for having to do so.”
Is There Significance To Your Baby’s Name?
Another very important element parents look at is if the name they have picked has a meaning behind it – if it’s significant or not. You could always do a little bit of research to find out what different baby names mean and maybe even what they mean in different languages! Another way a name can be significant is if it’s already the name of another family member. For example, you could use your mom or grandma’s name for your daughter because presumably it’s meaningful.
Names For The Future
Some of you may disagree with this, some of you may not think so far into the future, and some of you may agree completely: some parents while picking a name, imagine their baby in the future applying for a job! Imagine having a really weird and bizarre name while trying to get into a professional field. Some companies may have second thoughts, even though the name was once cute for a toddler, but not so much as an adult.
