Her Diagnosis And Treatment
Kim Overton was diagnosed with fibroid tumors at the age of 34 in 2005. Being a single 34-year-old herself, she was advised by the doctors to try having a baby within 5 years if she wanted one. The doctors assured her that the removal of fibroids wouldn’t affect her fertility. But she could not wait any longer if she wanted to have kids as the fibroids grow continuously.
Kim scheduled her first myomectomy (the surgical removal of fibroids) when she was turning 35. Five years later, she got pregnant and gave birth to her first son at the age of 39. Although she still had the condition, luckily the fibroids didn’t affect her delivery. Everything went on smoothly. One year later, after the birth of her son, she had her second surgery. Around 2012, after having enough time to recover, she decided to try for a baby again. This is when things got tough for her.
Race Against Time
She described in her blog how she had a rough time during a year and a half trying to get pregnant. Being in her 40’s and being diagnosed with fibroids, nothing was working in her favor. But even after going through many false alarms and negative pregnancy tests, she didn’t lose hope. She then received the hard truth from the doctors that she may not be able to get pregnant.
That’s when she started thinking about surrogacy. It was no easy choice as she never had to think about it until then. There were obviously so many questions running through her mind- more importantly, how to get started?
The Amazing Journey To Surrogacy
One day, she had an emotional conversation about her infertility experience with her cousin. They then started talking about Cyndee, her cousin’s 26-year-old daughter, who is a mom to two little girls. In her blog, Kim says how after that conversation, Cyndee called her up and offered to be her surrogate.
Baby Oliver – Miracle Of Life
All the paperwork and doctor’s visit took another year and a half. After many turmoils, and ups and downs, Cyndee was finally confirmed pregnant on July 27, 2015. By then, Kim had met her significant other and married him. Everything went fine and Cyndee delivered baby Oliver. Cyndee, being a mom of two girls continued dialog to let her kids know that the baby in her tummy was their cousin Oliver. The girls now refer to Kim as Oliver’s mommy instead of Cousin Kim. Cute, isn’t it?
Pregnancy and childbirth is a beautiful experience. Nothing beats the feeling of being a new mom. And it doesn’t always have to be you who is giving birth to enjoy the perks of motherhood. Kim’s story shows us that if you are somebody who wants to have a baby but can’t, there are several options available with today’s advanced medical science. You can go for IVF, IUI, freezing embryos, surrogacy, and adoption, among a few other options. You can talk to your doctor or partner and decide what option works best for you.
