People often say, “When the heart is full, the eyes overflow!” And it’s absolutely true. But that does not mean that crying is a sign of weakness. In fact, crying is healthy! It may sound weird to most people as crying is mostly associated with being unhappy or weak. However, crying is not a sign of weakness. It is, in fact, a sign of great courage.

It takes immense courage for an individual to let out their repressed feelings or their negative emotions. Crying helps you release those emotions and make you feel much more relaxed. Moreover, crying is not just associated with negativity. Sometimes, tears flow out of happiness too.

Most of you might have heard the phrase “Men don’t cry.” Well, they do. And, for the most part, they have the tendency to express their feelings more than women. Women, in fact, can be stable and subtle at times. Men, on the other hand, lack the capacity to hold back their feelings and often end up expressing themselves. Yet crying is absolutely normal. So, one shouldn’t be ashamed of crying in front of others for it is a very good way of expressing that your feelings are genuine.

But that’s not all. Below we have compiled a list of 6 good reasons to justify why crying is healthy. Read on to know some lesser known facts about crying!

1. Crying Is A Stress-Buster

This is absolutely true. Crying does help in relieving stress. People face so many challenging and stressful situations every day. Be it work-related troubles or complicated relationships, people tend to take a lot of stress. But crying your heart out can actually help you in venting out the stress from your mind.

Scientifically speaking, when a person cries, their body releases a stress-related hormone known as ‘adrenocorticotropin,’ which is a natural stress-buster (1).

Ever stuck in a situation where you have to deal with the loss of a loved one or a broken heart? Well, in such situations, crying your heart out might seem like the only option. Tears contains endogenous painkillers that actually help to soothe your pain. This helps in calming your brain and thus relieves you from the heaviness that you feel deep inside. It’s also the reason why you feel so numb post a good crying session!

3. It Brightens Up Your Mood

One might think as to how crying could possibly brighten up anyone’s mood. Well, science comes to the rescue again! When a person cries, his or her brain produces a hormone called as ‘endorphin,’ which causes them to relax and thus improves their mood considerably (2).

Moreover, when a person cries, they let out their emotions and feelings which, in turn, reduce the burden on their brain and helps them relax.

4. It Releases Emotions

Crying is the best way to release your emotions and reduce psychosomatic issues, which can be described as illnesses or other conditions that arise in your physical body due to mental stress. Hence, by suppressing your tears, you might suffer from depression or anxiety, which could ultimately lead to low self-esteem.

And, this is not just limited to depression. Suppressing your pain also invites a number of other health problems. For example, a person who is always depressed or sad might avoid eating food or drinking water. This might lead to indigestion or constipation, and other subsequent ailments.

5. It Improves Relationships

Above all, crying also helps in improving relationships. Confused? Well, when a person is stressed, he/she might act differently than they usually do. They might end up being frustrated or depressed or even angry. They might just distance themselves from people and would want to stay aloof. But what if they come across someone who might give them a shoulder to cry on? Or someone who might just sit beside them and listen to all their complaints and frustration and just comfort them with words of kindness?

Well, every one of us would want someone like this in their lives – someone special who would listen to them, comfort them, and talk to them – all of this leading to an improved and much stronger relationship.

Of course! Science says that when a person cries, the mucus membranes around his/her eyes tend to be lubricated. In such cases, if a person holds back their tears or stops themselves from crying, his vision might get affected. On the other hand, if they let themselves cry, their eyes remain hydrated and moist and, therefore, gives them a better vision.

So, the next time you feel sad or depressed about something, don’t keep your feelings suppressed. Instead, cry your heart out and free yourself from all the worries, sadness, depression, and tension. The moment you let your feelings out, you tend to feel lighter and happier than ever!
